MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this extremely rare 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Series I convertible, similar to the 1966 model piloted by Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate.” This car was a previous owner’s pride and joy for 27 years! Finished New Formula Red with black leather, the paint has a great shine with only a few minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. This Pininfarina-designed, recently restored spider is one of only 6,324 produced between 1966 and 1967.
Purchased in 1989 and well cared for by a Mr. Stanton in Washington state, he treated this Alfa to comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic refresh in 2011. Work performed included new paint, a new soft top, and rebuilt engine head and carburetors. Not a garage queen, he drove the car regularly.
Re-finished in New Formula Red, a Honda hue often seen on its NSX and S2000 two-seaters, this Italian-bodied roadster shows extremely well with only minor imperfections visible upon close inspection. All the trim is present and is brilliant and displays normal wear the bumperettes display decently. The Rota eight-spoke alloy wheels look brilliant with no signs of marring or curb rash and are mounted within Bridgestone Potenza P185/65R15 tires. The new black canvas convertible top fits very well with no visible tearing and the three rear windows are extremely clear. The car has a black boot that functions as designed and is in great condition.
Inside, the black leather front bucket seats and rear cargo compartment look great with no major signs of wear visible. Instead of carpeting there are two elongated Alfa Romeo floor mats that are in good condition. There is no radio in this car (the Ansa exhaust should provide a suitable soundtrack though), but the period correct dashboard, thick, wood-rimmed, three-spoke steering wheel and matching shift knob, both bearing the Alfa logo, are a striking contrast to the red exterior of the car, add to the period feel and look fantastic. All gauges have the correct appearance and function as designed.
This nicely represented Alfa has a 1.6-liter overhead cam four-cylinder engine equipped with rebuilt dual Weber DCOE carburetors and is hooked to a five-speed manual transmission. The factory original 15-inch steel wheels and hubcaps are included.
The Alfa Romeo Spider was a roadster made from 1966 to 1993 and included a small run of 1994 models for the North American market. The Spider remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes. To choose a name for the car, Alfa Romeo announced a write-in competition, offering an example of the new car as a prize. More than 100,000 ballots were sent in; the winning proposed name was duetto (duet). However, duetto could not be officially adopted due to trademark issues so the car was simply called Alfa Romeo Spider 1600.
Car comes with boxes of items, including the original steel wheels, hub caps, miscellaneous other parts, a spare parts catalog, technical specifications manual plus a tonneau cover and a cloth car cover.
