Featuring a coveted color and in impressive condition with only 45k original miles, this 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce has sailed through the decades in great form and stands ready to provide its next owner with a truly inspired driving experience. It represents the chance to own a quintessential Italian sports car with plenty of life left ... at a good price.
It's not all that often that a manufacturer comes up with a design so timeless that it remains intact for an extended period of time with only minor changes, but Alfa Romeo certainly attained this with the Spider Veloce. Introduced to enthusiastic acclaim during the 1966 Geneva Car Show, the Spider's appearance remained largely unchanged over the years - with the exception of more modern, sturdier bumpers in front and back - as Alfa Romeo logically concluded "Why mess with a good thing?" Clad in its original (yes, original) blue metallic paint that's still looking very sharp, this Veloce provides visual evidence of just how correct they were. Sleek, yet understated, it's a great, nimble-looking car by any measure, and it's certainly benefitted from protective care over the years, as both the chrome and rubber components match the impressive condition of the paint. Alfas like this one are synonymous with open air motoring, and your first inclination will probably be to picture yourself out on the open road with nothing but blue sky above you. But for those occasions calling for shelter from the elements, the nearly-new black, manual convertible top lifts easily and even sports a very clear plastic window in back.
The tan leather interior is particularly appealing, with comfortable and supportive high-backed bucket seats, unscuffed door panels that still cling firmly to their frames, and a center console that positions the shifter within very comfortable reach. Just behind the stock wood grain steering wheel, the dash area looks particularly fresh - its gauges are very readable behind crystal clear lenses and the pad sitting just above is supple-looking and shows no splits. Unlike many drop tops of the era, this one features air conditioning and it's in good form to cool you and your passenger through well-located registers on the dash. An AM/FM radio sits front and center to provide your choice of talk or music for your excursions. Owing to its pronounced depth, there's a surprising amount of luggage space in the trunk area in back, which is lined with fresh tan carpeting.
Having logged just a little over 45,000 miles over the years certainly has its benefits, and the fuel injected 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine sitting under the hood reflects that, starting right up and running smoothly. It's paired with a 5-speed manual transmission that makes cruising at highway speeds for extended periods a low-RPM affair. The Spider's low profile, combined with coil spring suspension in both front and back, gives it all the corner-carving prowess you'd want, and its 4-wheel power disc brakes bring this sleek car to a stop in impressively short order. A number of components, including the gas tank, hoses and water pump, have been recently replaced, and with such low mileage, there are no worries about staying close to home. This undeniably appealing open-air roadster sits on a set of 14" stock Alfa Romeo wheels, outfitted with Michelin radials.
