The second-generation VW Beetle with the classic Oval rear window had a brief run from 1953 to 1957. Because of its heritage and short run, it remains one of the most desirable and collectible of all early Bugs. However, finding one that has survived without custom modifications, or serious rust is extremely difficult.

This 1956 VW classic Oval window Type 1 is one of the best examples of the era and it’s rust free. Best of all it wonderfully maintainedfrom the day it was new.

Many moons ago,the car was driven from the previous owner’s home in Canada to the sunny shores of Southern California. The family kept the car stored for most of its life while in California, until the day they brought it out for restoration.

Family Service Center of San Juan Capistrano, California took on the restoration work in 2015, and over the course of many months and more than $25,000 in parts and labor, the car began to come together as it should. It’s one beautiful restoration.

To ensure the best in drivability, the 1192cc engine was completely rebuilt during the process, and nothing in the powertrain and engine was overlooked, and that included even the little things like the fuel pump, carburetor, plugs and all associated hardware. Even the clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing are new.

While the engine work was underway, the transmission was replaced and upgraded to a later generation synchro type trans with new axles and nose cone. The shift coupler was also upgraded at the time.

To ensure the best possible VW Polar Silver paint finish, the car was taken down to metal at FSC.The emblems, moldings, trim and seals throughout were restored or replaced with factory parts where needed. Extra attention was given to details like clips, nuts, handles, holders, boots and bolts. The glass and seals are in great shape, even the wiper arms and blades are new. After the body and paint, the period correct luggage rack was powder coated and re-installed. Turn signals, headlamps, interior lights and even the factory driving light are operational.

The interior is nothing short of specular too, given the fact that it retains the period correct look and feel down the fuel reserve extension under the dash. All wiring is OE-like and yes, the horn works. The factory Motorola radio is original and the heater blower motor is fully operational. All carpeting and floor mats are in great shape as is the upholstery and door panels.

The trunk was restored as well, and a new liner installed. The correct jack and spare tire are also part of the package. The odometer shows 45,856 miles and what we know is the engine was upgraded for better performance sometime in the mid Sixties. It rides on new tires and original wheels.

The car drives with exceptional ease, and agility. This ’56 Oval window is surprisingly fun to cruise down the highway, and when combined with the collectability aspect of the car, all eyes follow wherever you travel. It’s a real head tuner and a fantastic investment for the purist looking for something genuine and beautifully restored. It doesn’t get any sweeter than this classic Bug from the Fifties.

About Factory Correct Cars offered by BlueChip Motorcars

BlueChip Motorcars periodically offers classic cars that may be listed as Factory Correct, or Numbers Matching. Because there are many opinions about the term(s) used to describe these types of listings, allow us to explain how BlueChip Motorcars comes to that assessment.

As you may know, depending on the source, the term “matching numbers, or factory correct,” may mean many things to many people. Purists might define it as a car with every possible window crank, dash knob or even every nut and bolt is original to the car from the time it left the production line. Although some classic cars do exist in that rare condition, most do not.

The majority of classic cars on the market were at some point in their ownership, restored or repaired with NOS parts (new old stock) or licensed reproduction parts. Whenever the information is available to us about the use of these parts, BlueChip Motorcars will gladly pass it along to the potential buyer.

BlueChip Motorcars uses the term Factory Correct or Numbers Matching only to distinguish a vehicle where the engine casting code corresponds with the VIN and Cowl Tag code. If these codes tell the same story about the car in question, BlueChip Motorcars then considers it to be a Factory Correct or Numbers Matching vehicle. However, unless otherwise stated, the transmission, rear end, and transmission may or may not be original to the car.

BlueChip Motorcars welcomes all potential buyers to verify all the information with a qualified expert. We would be happy to email you all the numbers that are obtainable on any vehicle where the term Factory Correct or Matching Numbers is used.
