1971 Volkswagen Thing Additional Info:

Selling my very rare Volkswagen Safari. This is not your everyday 73-74 import Thing. This is a non-import brought into the US back in 2004 in very poor condition. This is not a NATO thing. I bought it in 2012 and rebuilt it replacing a lot of metal. This car is now 100% rust free. It is the most solid early Thing you will see in the US. It has all the early Thing only parts like the steering wheel, kilometer speedometer, the glove box door, small bump front fenders, 15 inch slotted wheels two of which are original to the car and reduction gearbox transmission. I do have the original early deck lid but it is not on the car right now because it is pretty bent up. It has a custom roof rack which can be removed quickly and is not drilled or welded to the car in any way. The rack must be tilted back to put the convertible top down. I have carried bike and kayaks on the rack. I have taken this car on many camping trips and it is a reliable driver. The engine is an all stock Mexican case built 1600cc with dual port heads. I do not have side curtains for it. Please message me if you have any questions.

I wanted to add more details. I bought this from someone who flew to Mexico in 2004 and drove it back into the US. It was very damaged and full of bondo. It had very little rust to began with. I have done a ton of metalwork to get it back to where it is now including a front and rear clip. I spray sealed the interior cavities after doing the metalwork to prevent it from rusting internally. I had to source OEM Hella tailights and not the cheap repop euro style. The top is from Thing Shop and has one grommet torn just behind the driver side rear door but has not effected the use of the top. I have a Ebersbacher gas heater that goes with it but it is not in working condition. I
