An American icon, the Manx style dune buggies have been a familiar sight on beaches and highways since the 1960’s and are rapidly becoming more and more collectable.
Thanks to their unique and exceptionally light design, they can fly across any terrain, are street legal and with can be flat-towed by relatively small vehicles.
The original manufacture ofthis style of fiberglass buggy was the “LIDO”.
During its short production in the late 60’s, the Lido was manufactured by Balboa Buggies, a premium builder in Southern CA.
Like the original Manx, copies (or knock offs) were El Lobo, Letigra, Enos 500 and Lithia MK3
but the original Lido is highly regarded among Vintage buggy aficionados for their superior fiberglass construction and very cool body styling.
This fine example was completed by a fireman in Downey CA.
The Lido body was mounted to a 1967 VW pan and has lived a charmed life ever since.
California titled in 1975, he and his family enjoyed the Buggy on many trips throughout the 70’s and 80’s, once all the way down to Central Mexico.
When they got too old to travel, it was parked in their garage where it remained stored and preserved from the elements for last 30 years.
Recently, it was brought out of hibernation for the first time since 1988.
During its meticulous 3-year mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment, the body was removed from the pan, completely stripped and professionally refinished in classic, Manx Orange with premium, 2-stage automotive paint.
The motor was fully serviced with a new clutch, carburetor and ancillaries and the pan refreshed with new brakes, KYB shocks, IRS steering box and suspension components.
The body received new seals, electrical and stainless-steel hardware prior to reinstallation. All this major reconditioning included the use of premium materials and a lot of elbow grease.
The result is a beautiful, unique, solid, immaculate, vintage Buggy with everything working, zero issues and ready for the next 40 years of on or off-road adventures!
Let’s take a closer look now, starting with the exterior:
Aside from a few minor blems, the 2-stage finish looks very smooth, glossy and displays a deep finish.
In the sixty’s, Orange was the coolest of colors. Today, its retro hue will make the heart of any true Buggy aficionado skip a beat.
Also, a brand-new Sombrero Bikini Top was fitted.
The top installs in seconds, protecting the interior and its occupants from the sun and is unflappable, even at freeway speeds.
The wire harness is brand new, complete with fuse box and detachable wire connectors for all serviceable electrical parts. All instrument lights, running lights, brakes, headlights (high & low-beam) and blinkers illuminate perfectly; even the windshield wipers and horn work!
Proudly wearing an original CA Blue & Gold plate (issued when it was built in 1975), license and registration fees are currently paid on this California native until November 2018.
Sparkling brightwork on the new mirror, front bumper AND headlights.
Overall, this vintage Buggy is the best original of its age we've ever seen; of course, without any kind of corrosion or collision damage on the ’67 VW pan.
A tow bar is included for "flat tow"with any vehicle with a 2” tow ball.
At only 1800 pounds, the buggy is easy to maneuver and super economical.
Brand new BF Goodrich radial tires up front..
and All Terrain TA’s rear are mounted staggered, 5-spoke chromed “wide five” wheels.
While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath.
Down under, the ’67 VW pan is solid with zero evidence of steel rot or collision damage anywhere.
With new KYB shocks installed and brakes replaced on all 4 corners, the buggy handles and stops superbly.
This Lido Buggy is in ship-shape and ready to be driven on any terrain!
Let’s have a look inside.
Climbing into the open cabin feels like stepping back in time, into the care-free world of 1960s.
We’re mightily impressed and equally humbled by the a "less is more" philosophy. Dune Buggies make perfect sense as a transportation choice for the new Millennium.
It's frugal and hip at the same time!
As ingeniously and tastefully designed as an iPhone, as easy to use and enjoy.
There's everything you need, not more, not less.
Well . . . almost.
Brand new, fully adjustable Cobra Classic sports seats and seat belts up front provide superior safety and comfort. Seats and sliders were purchased here: https://www.subesports.com/cobra/classic/cob-11000
Total cost for both front seats andsliders was over $1000.
This Lido also features a new Empi Steering wheel with working horn.
The dashfeatures original, working ’67 VW speedometer, gas gauge and windshield wipers.
VDO gauges illuminate but are not currently hooked-up.
New audio system features AM/FM/MP3 with adjustable marine quality speakers mounted below the dash and a USB connector to hookup your iPod or smart phone for outstanding stereo!
New parking brake and Empi quick-shifter with pull-ring reverse.
With the front seats adjusted forward, plenty of legroom is created for the rear passengers.
Brand new 12-volt battery, cables and terminals are nestled in the battery compartment which is molded into the fiberglass body making it easily serviceable below the rear seat. This feature is exclusive only to the Lido body.
It might look small from the outside, but this interior is big and easily accommodates four adults (or 5 kids!).
Have you ever seen another five-decade-old Buggy with such a cool interior?
Alright, let’s have a look at the engine.
This Buggy is powered by its original, 1967, indestructible, 1192cc, 40hpengine.
It starts and runs as it should with very peppy performance.
It may come as a revelation to many, but all you ever need to keep this strong 4-banger going is a screwdriver, a hammer, a set of pliers, and maybe a little bit of baling wire.
For anybody paying his (or her) own bills, it surely provides peace of mind to know there are no black boxes, injectors, electronics, and fancy stuff like that.
The VW is a minimalist car designed to deliver maximum fun!
The wiring is all new, front to back.
The engine runs on 12-volts and was fully serviced with all new starter, carburetor, fuel pump, plugs, distributer cap, wires, you name it: all the important items have been replaced.
The engine always starts, revs freely with no smoke, sounds crisp and runs smoothly with good oil pressure and only minor leaks.
Yes, any Vee-Dub-Buggy can be very tough and reliable with a bit of preventative maintenance!
Drivability:
Driving this immaculate Dune Buggy is very enjoyable affair.
It feels like true time travel, back to an era that was fun and carefree.
Turn on the ignition and the motor comes to life instantly. A sporty exhaust note alerts the senses. Put the floor-mounted shifter into first, release the clutch, and off you go.
Its small turning radius, direct handling, good brakes, and quick-to-shift 4-speed trans leave nothing to be desired off and on-road. Sustained 75-80mph highway speeds are a breeze.
Buggy starts, idles, runs, drives, handles and stops as you'd expect if from a well-kept example of the species.
Though a half century old, this VW powered Buggy still maneuvers comfortably in today's bustling traffic-- thusly, freeway driving is not a daunting task at all. Even in car-crazed Southern California, the "Lido" attracts plenty of attention wherever you go.
In a world of tank-like trucks disguised as SUVs, a Manx Orange Buggy spells FUN in capital letters and reminds everybody that size does matter: smaller means quicker, more agile.
It's a proven formula: "The smaller the car, the more fun it provides!"
Beautiful from every imaginable angle, this fine Buggy convinces by the sum of its details: body, paint, interior, chrome. . . everything is fresh and thus belies its age to the fullest.
Isn't this what it's all about?
To escape from the rigors of work, the boundaries of having to fit in, the ennui of a quasi-virtual life.
