1987 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia Camper

Viva Las Vegas Autos Presents . . .

An exceptionally original and highly maintained 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia Camper. Nowadays, finding a 1987 or any 80-91 Westfalia in original unrestored condition looking like this beauty is near impossible. Finding one that hasn’t had body damage, rust or repaint, near impossible. So when you take a long look at the 282 pictures of this incredible Westfalia, consider that you may be looking at one of a handful of full Westfalia campers that’s this original, fabulously functional and exceptionally maintained through the three prior owners that it had. Rare will be your opportunity to own one like this. This is coming from a guy that has owned no less than 15 Westys in the last 15 years. I know my Westfalias and I have cherished all of them. If you have owned one or more in the past, of if this may be your very first adventure into owning one, you’ll want to take a serious look into this Westy because there are NOT many left like this at all.

Viva Las Vegas Autos Known History . . .

The history of Westy start with how I came to own it. My daughter and I were having lunch here in Boulder City, Nevada. We finished and pulled out of the parking lot to head west towards my shop. Just as we pulled out on the main thoroughfare, this Westfalia was driving east on the opposite side of the road. As one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE vehicles, I never miss one driving down the road and I always stare hard to see if by chance there might just be a For Sale sign in any of the visible windows. DANG! There was this time! I demanded my daughter to flip a u-turn on the busy Nevada Hwy (93) and chase this Westy down. Going the opposing direction, I knew we were going to have to press my daughter Toyota Hybrid Prius to it’s maximum performance…yeah right. Well, she did a great job catching up while trying desperately not to screw up her high mileage averages. Two miles and one intersection east down the highway, we finally caught up and I pointed my cell phone camera at the vinyl sign on the rear window, zoomed in on it and click the camera button. Believe me, most Westy’s could never outrun me in any car, but my nineteen year old daughter driving her Prius and conserving every dime of gas money, this one had a fat chance of getting away from me; and I wasn’t going to let that happen. It has been at least three years since I owned my last Westflia if not longer, This one had serious eyeball and I just had to have it…and it had a for sale sign too. Often when I see them in parking lots, I wait for their owners to come out so I can ask if they plan to sell anytime soon. Most look at me like I am a lunatic (I am for Westfalias) and gracefully decline. So, before we even did our u-turn again to head back to the shop, I called the number that was on the window. Got a voicemail message and left my name. Two days later, I got the call from its owner. I had to retain my excitement because I wanted to buy this one and make the right deal. I know what the market is on these Westy’s and I has just hoping that I could make sense of his price and what I could do with it. I buy these because I love them, but I also buy them so I can find their new passionate owners, just like me. If there is a fair margin in the interim and I can take it out to go camping a few times before I sell it, I am happy to have owned another great Westfalia camper. So that is the story of how I came to own this Westy. Now the history that I know of this Westy after owning it for a short while.

The previous owner bought this Westfalia in March of 2012 with 167k miles on it, drove it just under 10k miles in the last 6 years and absolutely loved it for the time he owned it, The owners prior to him, were from Oregon and I talked with them too. They owned this Westy from 1996 to 2012, they bought it with just under 100k miles on it and maintained it to the extreme for all the years they owned it. That owner told me they made a terrible mistake selling this one, because they invested so much into all the extras then sold it thinking it would be an upgrade to a Rialta 22 footer. That Rialta lasted them for nine months and then they found another 1987 Westy to replace it. They were thrilled to hear from me and hear about the history of their beloved Westy. It was the nicest one they had ever owned and cared for. They didn’t know too much about the prior owner other than to tell me that he had performed the important head job just prior to their ownership. So it looks like a total of three owners, two of which I have talked with and I also have a substantial pile of maintenance receipts showing the incredible care and upkeep for this camper.

Viva Las Vegas Autos Preparations and Conditional Assessment. . .

Any classic vehicle I buy, I want it as good as I would have it be if I were to keep it forever. So, the first order of business when I buy a vehicle is to fully inspect it after finding out the maintenance history and care of said vehicle. Westfalia campers are vitally important to their owners as part of their daily lives. I know this, I have owned more than most people have and I have taken my family and children out on many occasions to enjoy a weekend trip or go grocery shopping in them. Westys are very unique in the fact that they can go almost almost anywhere and be quite practical at it. Twice I’ve used this camper and a photoshoot trip vehicle for fitness models to change in and relax in while others were in front of my camera. Twice for camping with my kids. The prior owner loved this camper as his vehicle of choice for paddle boarding here in Nevada and Southern California. The prior owners to him, they when all over the country joining other VW camper owners on vacation trips and group campouts. Going to the hardware store or grocery store is just as useful with a Westy as long as you know it will be your trusty vehicle. So, as it was for all of it prior owners, we wanted to make sure it was for us too. A full inspection showed us that cylinder compression was excellent and consistent on all cylinders, 140, 140, 145, 146; a very important number to understand the value of a flat four engine. Brand new is usually 155-160. Since the valves hadn’t been adjusted in the last 5000 miles, we did that too and replaced the valve cover seals while there and of course, inspected the heads which were perfectly sealed. (See the pictures of those head seals while you look through 280 pictures). We replaced the belt on the Air Conditioner and checked for leaks, Yes it blows cold on the back of your head from the rear vents about 5 feet away, but it’s better than nothing. Just turn it off when you’re going up a big hill. You Westy owners know what I am talking about. As for everything else, the engine purrs with perfection and is very reliable. The gauges all work as well. The coolant pipes below the van are in excellent condition too. Receipts show the extreme care prior to us, and that’s great but we still wanted to see everything for ourselves and document it with pictures for our buyer. Tires are great with excellent tread left and the brakes are nearly like new too. The clutch was also replaced along with the transmission being rebuilt by the second owner. All drive boots look great with no leaks either. We replaced both mud flaps behind the front wheels with new. The camper was exceptionally clean but we detailed it top to bottom. The picnic set is brand new and goes with the camper too. Never used. Chairs and camping gear shown in a few of the pictures are from our camping trip and are not included. Overall, the functionality and performance of the Westy are excellent. All the original camper features are with the camper too. Curtains, screens and tools, all there plus a host of incredible and expensive options that come with it too. This is our first Westy with an Awning and oh wow, after one campout, I am hooked. You will be too. On one of my photoshoots, I ran a diesel powered shop blow furnace from the 1100 watt inverter. The models loved that when they could stay warm in the 60 degree temperatures of spring with their fitness competitor bikinis on, The rear changing room addition was a great option too for camping and changing clothes. Everything just works great and it will for you too.

As for the cosmetic aspects of this Westy. Wow! Original paint, no panel has ever been painted and there is no rust in any of the usual rusty areas found on so many Westfalia campers. In the seams, at the base of the grill behind the front bumper, in the lower wheel wells or frame underneath, the entire van is in exceptional original condition. Never wrecked, Carfax verified and visually checked from top to bottom. This Westfalia is also exceptional inside. Seats, door panels, headliner, carpets, cabinetry, flooring, glass, screens, weather seals, rubber, all exceptional original condition showing only minor wear. The pop-tent has a small tear less than my hand long as you will see in the pictures. Not flawless, but not worth replacing unless you are a crazed perfectionist. Again, I post highly detailed images and I don’t hide any aspect of condition in this camper, so look at every picture and enjoy the exceptional condition of this great Westfalia. If you like what you see, bid what you and I know is the market value to own a unit this incredible and find out just how fair a reserve I have on this great Camper. Good Luck and I hope the winner flies into Las Vegas with the intent to take the long way home camping as you go.

  • Viva Las Vegas Autos Note from the Owner. . .

I am a “used car dealer” but before that, I’m an automobile enthusiast. I love original, rare and high quality modified vintage and modern cars. Over the past 15 years I’ve been in business, I have come to appreciate an expanding selection of high-demand, high value vehicles as well. I specialize in and I am always on the lookout for cars and trucks that were cherished by their previous owners.

I have an experienced eye for quality and I’ve discovered that my preferred buyers can instantly discern such a vehicle and I have therefore, built my business and reputation around finding these kinds of cars for this type of customer.Super low miles and/or gentle ownership are strict requirements but a car must do something for me on a personal level if there is any hope of convincing you, the buyer, that this is an above average, exceptional vehicle. If nothing about the car excites me, it probably won’t do much for you either and I would soon be out of business.

With just four employees and no sales people, I realize how unusual a “dealership” like mine may be at a first glance. It has taken great care and effort to create such an organization and often, an unusually high investment in a particular car we are about to list. To sell the best it is critical to have a trusted expert in my corner. First we do an exhaustive 130 point inspection on each and every vehicle and hope nothing escapes our methodical investigation. Experience has shown that everything I spend making a car truly “right” will come back to me not only with a higher selling price, but a happy customer that says good things about Viva Las Vegas Autos. Moreover; it allows us to describe the car with ease and confidence, something that simply is not possible unless we think it is true. If major issues are found or the cost of fixing the car the way it should be makes it too expensive to sell, my choice is an easy one. I simply absorb a few hundred dollars loss for my trouble and sell it at auction so you don’t get a headache over the vehicle.

After the vehicle is fully checked over and made whole at any level it needs to be, we researches its history, documents documenting originality and authenticity. Historical significance, rarity, special features, possible modifications and much more are used to accurately describe the vehicle with integrity and honesty. Most important for the potential buyer are the 100 to 200 high resolution pictures that I take myself. The pricey equipment I use would be right at home in the hands of the very best professional photographers and I’ve developed a logical format that walks you around the entire vehicle with close-up shots of every square inch. I provide detailed views of the interior, under the hood and then put it on a lift to show the undercarriage and confirm that the beauty of the car you are considering is not merely skin deep. Even our detailers are enthusiastic about the cars they meticulously clean. Reconditioning can sometimes take several as we do all that we can within reason to get our vehicles in tip top condition visually and cosmetically. Way more than just a cheap detail….Our details are more like refurbishing to as close to new as we can possibly get our vehicles

Usually, I’ll also include a high definition video that shows the car doing its thing. If it’s a fast car, we film it going fast. If it’s a 4x4 you’ll see it crawling up a hill. In every case you will hear things like a rumbling exhaust, working sound system and watch gauges operational as well.

No “dealer,” on-line or in the real world, takes it to this level. No other seller or organization provides you, the buyer, with so much information. I do this because it is the only way I can convince a person; often a world away, unable to touch or feel their purchase that my vehicle is for real and what I say is an honest assessment. All the above is necessary for me to stay in business while keeping integrity intact.I want every buyer to be happy and I need glowing feedback on eBay. To accomplish that I need satisfied customers that are as thrilled with their purchase as I was when I bought it.

If you have any questions at all, please call me on my cell at: 702-353-7500. If your inquiry is sincere and your offerserious, you’ll find me the most accommodating business partner you’ve ever dealt with. If you call or e-mail asking for my reserve or “what is my bottom line” I will be looking for ways to politely end the conversation. Until you are ready to actually make an offer, I will happily quote you a liberal suggested retail price – a number we both know will not buy the car so, don’t waste your time, or mine. I am after all, a “used car dealer.”
