1977 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Type 2 Additional Info:

This beautiful, much loved 1977 VW Campmobile is up for sale. This VW bus is the perfect adventure vehicle for those times when you just wanted to hit the road, camp and explore. The functional and mechanical aspects of the vehicle have been sorted out, as illustrated by the extensive list of details bellow. The vehicle does not represent an immaculate restoration, but instead it has the appropriate level of "wear and tear" for a vintage VW bus that has been well used and loved for. Our family is growing and our needs are changing, and thus we are reluctantly selling our "kombi" to the next loving owner and onto a new adventure.

If interested, please call (520) 300-1068.

Drive train:

  • Original "Type 4" 2.0L, 70hp, Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection engine.
  • This is in effect a "Porsche" engine and it was a vast improvement in terms of power and reliability over the "Type 1" engine found in the earlier Bay Window VW buses.
  • New engine seal.
  • New S-boot (between throttle body and AFM).
  • Replaced all vacuum hoses, intake manifold tubes, and manifold gaskets.
  • New fan belt.
  • New driver-side pushrod tube seals.
  • New Hella oil pressure sending unit.
  • Recent oil (20-50W) change with a new filter, and recent valve adjustment.
  • Oil inspection plate has had a new VDO oil temperature-sending unit installed.
  • New VDO oil temperature gauge installed in the empty gauge where an optional clock would be.
  • New EMPI four tip exhaust with a complete set of new gaskets.
  • Four new (not remanufactured) CV half-shaft axles, with new joints and boots.

Ignition:

  • New starter.
  • New ignition coil.
  • New points.
  • New NGK spark plugs.

Fuel:

  • New air filter.
  • New fuel-sending unit.
  • All (from the tank, to the injectors) of the original "cloth" fuel lines have been replaced with modern rubber ones.
  • All fuel injector seals and O-rings have been replaced.
  • New Performance fuel pump.

Electrical:

  • All original electrical components (headlights, tail lights, dash lights, etc.) are functioning, with the exception the backup lights.
  • New turn signal switch.
  • New turn signal relay.
  • New hazard switch.
  • New battery.
  • Older Kenwood AM/FM cassette radio. The buttons for tuning into stations do not work, but the radio has been used with an auxiliary cord from a cassette adapter.
  • Two new speakers installed in the doors.
  • New 100W solar panels that charge a new 80 Amp-hour deep cycle gel battery that is in parallel with the engine battery allowing the alternator to charge both while the vehicle is running. A solenoid isolates the batteries when the vehicle is not running allowing one to run all of the electrical accessories from the deep cycle battery. The solar panels are installed on the pop-top, which is at the perfect angle when it is raised.
  • New solar panel charge controller with two USB plugs.
  • New 400W inverter with two outlets for 120V appliances, and one USB plug.
  • Two New 12V LED lights that plug into the charge controller. These are very bright, and are useful lighting up the campsite.

Wheels and Brakes:

  • Brand new LT195/75/14 tires. These are "Light Truck" tires with the proper load range ("C”, 6-ply) for a VW bus.
  • New passenger-side tie rod.
  • Original power (vacuum assisted) disk brakes function very well, with new brake pads in the front.
  • Two new front brake hoses.
  • New shocks on all four wheels provide an even profile, and a smooth ride at all speeds.

Interior:

  • The Campmobile Westfalia interior is complete and fully functional in original un-restored condition. It is a unique version in that it the cabinets are covered in a white laminate instead of the more common "faux" wood. The Westfalia interior includes:

o The Z-bed (rear seating that folds down into a bed) with storage underneath.

o Overhead storage above the Z-bed, and a cabinet next to it with a mirror on the inside of the tall door.

o The original electrical refrigerator works very well at keeping things cold, but does not make ice. The electrical draw of the refrigerator (5.4 amps) is easily handled by the solar panels and can be left on all the time.

o The original Westfalia electrical control panel is located above the refrigerator. This includes an analog battery monitor (for the auxiliary battery), the refrigerator switch, a city power switch, and a timer for charging the battery (which is now obsolete with the solar panels).

o Electrical outlets for city power are located next to the storage compartment, under the Z-bed. These can be used when the vehicle is plugged into a 120V, AC source on the outside of the vehicle.

o The original table swivels around the rear seat and the kitchen, and contains a folding leaf to adjust its size.

o A smaller table hooks onto the dash and can be assembled in between the front seats.

o The sink has a water tank underneath it, and supplies water through a new electrical water pump powered by a new toggle switch. The sink can also be hooked up to city water via a hose connection on the outside of the vehicle.

o The two-burner stovetop is fully functional and is powered by a propane tank underneath the sliding door.

o The pop-top is fitted with brand new fabric that has three mosquito-netted windows, including one that provides access to the rooftop rack. The top also contains another folding bed.

o Two new heavy-duty hydraulic struts assist in raising the pop-top.

o An original storage box can be used as an additional front seat (in between the driver and passenger), and as a step to get to the top bed.

o Two jalousy windows on each side of the vehicle.

  • New laminate Cherry hardwood floors.
  • The original upholstery is in remarkably good condition, with the exception of the front seats that are faded in color but are still very comfortable and functional.
  • Original three-point seat belts in the front, and two lap belts in the back seat.
  • The original headrests are included, but would need to be refurbished or recovered.
  • Original curtains can cover all of the windows, including privacy curtains that can cover the windows of the front doors and the windshield to provide complete coverage.
  • Original mosquito netting for the back allows on to leave the back door open without introducing insects.
  • Original front floor matting in used, yet decent shape.

Body and Exterior:

  • All original and rust-free body.
  • The original sage green paint has received a repaint in a two-tone white and light-green color scheme that is beautiful and very fitting to the vehicle.
  • Original sekurit glass in excellent shape with perfectly functioning windows.
  • The jalousy and vent windows have some old tint that is peeling off which has no affect on their functionality.
  • New windshield wipers.
  • Original lenses in good shape.
  • Fully functional mirrors.
  • Functional spare tire has been moved from the original location (behind the drivers seat) to the front of the vehicle.
  • The original keys open, close, and lock all doors.
  • Fully functional sliding door.
  • The heater boxes and all of the associated ducts are in place. An additional fan (operated by a two-speed switch underneath the dash) has been installed in the duct leading to the vents in the front, which blows plenty of air and makes the heater much more effective.
  • A flat-four electrical connector is installed for towing lights, although a tow hitch is not present.

Included:

  • Original and fully functional Bilstein jack, located in its original location, underneath the passenger seat
  • An assortment of spare parts (ignition coil, spark plugs, C.V. axles, light bulbs, etc.)
  • A stack of receipts documenting the vehicles maintenance and replacement of all of the parts listed above
  • Required literature:

o Volkswagen Official Service Manual

o How to keep your Volkswagen alive - A manual of step by step procedures for the compleat idiot (by John Muir)

Conclusion:

  • This is a running, stopping, and driving, 40-year-old vehicle, and as such no guarantee or warranty is given or implied.
  • The vehicle is being sold "as is”: a beautiful, well-maintained, and unmolested 1977 VW Campmobile.
