1991 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Sport Utility 4-Door Additional Info:

I recently flew in to my old home town Tucson, AZ to buy a vintage BMW motorcycle in order to ride it cross country to my new house in PA and my buddy whose an Ace Toyota Specialist showed me this cherry '91 4Runner that he recently completed for a client who now wants to sell it. For any questions about this unique rig please don't hesitate to contact him directly at the phone number at the bottom of this page.
VEHICLE:
This is one of the nicest and rarest 2nd generation 4Runner (90-95) in existence. It's rare because only one in a hundred 2nd generation 4Runners came with a 22RE 4 Cylinder. It's nice because it's so clean and in such exceptional shape being a rust free vehicle from Southern Arizona. It also has the desirable 5 Speed manual transmission. The 4x4 utilizes a 2 speed transfer case and manual lockout hubs. It runs & drives like new with no mechanical issues and zero fluid leaks of any kind. It has 4 nice meaty 31 x 10.5 x 15 BFG All Terrain tires mounted and balanced on 4 stock 15 x 7 factory steel rims.
Truck has been meticulously gone through by a team of Toyota professionals whonot only rebuilt the factory installed 22RE EFI 4 Cylinder but also installed a brand new clutch and flywheel as well as replaced all the brake and suspension components.
The vehicle comes with a clean notorized Arizona title along with a fresh passed Arizona Emissions Inspection plus receipts documenting all the thousands spent in parts and professional labor.
HISTORY:
1990 was the 1st year the 4Runner was offered with 4 doors. They were brilliant fully boxed framed trucks but unfortunately the vast majority built for the USA came with the (3.0) V6 which was recalled due to head gasket failure. Turns out the 3VZE had a serious design flaw with the cylinder heads and heat build up from a restrictive crossover exhaust, the engine being rushed into production in 1988 due to American demand for more power. The 22RE by contrast was in production from 1983 to 1995 and is known the world over as one of the most reliable internal combustion gasoline engine ever produced. Revolutionary in design because of the SOHC multi-port fuel injection and a hardened cast iron block with a nickle content higher than even most American muscle cars, often allowing rebuilds with only cylinder honing of the block instead of complete re-machining.

THE 22RE ENGINE:
Less than 1200 miles ago this truck's entire drive train, suspension and brakes were professionally removed with a mind towards rebuilding better than new. Every wearable & replaceable component that needed it was replaced. The cylinders were honed and new pistons and rings were installed along with new oil pump with main and rod bearings. New timing chain and guides. Cylinder head was sent to a machine shop for surfacing and 3 way valve grind with new stem seals. An all metal V6 radiator upgrade was installed for added cooling, along with fan clutch and belts with fresh coolant. Of course new Denso plugs, wires, cap rotor, oil & filters were installed. Finally front and rear main crank seals were replaced and a new flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing were installed.
Starts every time with a turn of the key. Runs just like a sewing machine. Smooth, quiet and powerful. No knocks, no smoke, no leaks, no issues. Very fuel efficient and reliable as they come.
SUSPENSION & BRAKES:New upper and lower ball joints plus inner and outer tie rods were installed. A 3 inch lift was installed utilizing ball joint spacers in front and FJ80 coil springs in the rear. (Truck should clear 33" tires if desired). The steering gear box was rebuilt and a new pitman arm plus idler arm were installed along with new Rancho long travel shocks. New CV axles were installed and the factory auto locking hubs were replaced with manual locking hubs (which keeps the front end from spinning when you don't want it to). Finally all the brake hardware along with pads, shoes, wheel cylinders & rotors were replaced. Of course a fresh alignment was also performed.
TRANSMISSION & DIFFERENTIALS:The factory 5 speed was removed and a new OEM clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing were mated to a new flywheel. The transfer case, transmission plus front and rear differential were drained and new gear oil added. The front and rear drive shafts were inspected and the grease zerks lubricated.
EMISSIONS:All the factory emissions equipment are untouched so this vehicle is compliant in all 50 States. It comes with a fresh passed emissions inspection slip generated on 5/6/17 from AZ which models itself after CA emissions laws. Being over 25 years old this truck is also eligible for Historic Plates in most States. That means you can get Collector Car Insurance from places like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which in not only far cheaper ($12/mo. for a $10,000 full coverage policy) but also the vehicle becomes immediately Emissions Exempt!
INTERIOR:
Non-smoking truck. The interior is amazingly clean for a 26 year old vehicle. The seats aren't ripped or stained. The carpet's not torn. The dash has a carpet cover which hides some inevitable heat cracking of the vinyl. There's an aftermarket Pioneer CD deck with aftermarket speakers in back and factory speakers in front. The AC blows cold and has been professionally converted to the modern 134A freon. The heat blows hot. The rear tailgate window goes up and down with either center console switch or the key in the tailgate. The back hatch features 2 side compartments, the driver's side holding the factory bottle jack. Stowed under the rear seat is the original jack tools to lower the spare, which is secured underneath in the factory location. The rear seats fold down to allow the rear compartment to lay flat like a pickup bed. The second owner installed a push button starter next to the e-brake handle so you turn the key and push the button to start.
EXTERIOR:
Rust free truck. On a scale of 1 to 10 the rust free scale would be 10. Was re-painted once several years ago by the 2nd owner. Shines like new. No fading. Never wrecked. No cracks in any glass. There are a few minor blemishes on the paint that don't show up well in pictures but you'd have to get 2 foot away to notice them. There's one small area a few inches wide on the drivers side where there is some paint starting to crack but again you don't notice unless you examine very close.
DRIVEABILITY:
Starts great. Runs great. Stops great. Handles great. Looks great. Comfortable to sit in. Comfortable to drive. Smooth ride. No rattles. No issues. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in and drive cross country as it will need nothing but fuel stops.
CLASSIC FULLY BOXED FRAME TOYOTA 4x4 WITH 4 DOORS AND 22RE 5 SPEEDThey don't build them like this anymore. Even modern Toyotas, with their partially boxed frames and cheaper interiors, lack the same quality as the older ones as they're not 100% Japanese anymore being assembled in the USA. Considering the abject junk the USA has been churning out for the last 35 years it's actually a badge of honor to drive a truck that says "100% Made in Japan" (and I come from a UAW family). I've probably worked on a thousand 2nd generation 4Runners since they were released in 1990 but this is only the 5th one with a factory 22RE that I've ever seen. A quarter century later units as nice as this are rare as unicorns.
