Porsche's 944 model finally received a huge performance boost in 1986 with the introduction of the turbocharged and intercooled 951 variant, popularly known as the 944 turbo.

A 944 turbo is almost as fast as a 930/911 Turbo. It accelerates like a jet fighter off the deck of an aircraft carrier, with 0-60mph occurring in under 6 seconds.

The turbo presented here, VIN *WP0AA0952GN153122* was manufactured in January of '86 as one of just 7,513 U.S. 944 turbos and shipped to California, where it was sold on April 30th, 1986 at PORSCHE of Oakland to a local enthusiast. It was driven sparingly, as a sunny-day-only toy. Less than 2,200 miles accumulated annually on its odometer.

The car comes with a clean and clear vehicle history report confirming mileage and provenance.

Never having left the Golden State, the car still features its original-issue, thirty-three-year-old California blue-and-gold license plates, front and back.

The merlot morrokide folder contains the original owner's manual, stamped maintenance booklet and hang tag outlining care and feeding of the genuine leather upholstery.

Original window sticker confirms that this car is 100% matching numbers.

Carfax is clean and confirms that this is a low mileage 2-owner California car with no issues reported, ever.

A breathtaking car in every aspect of its existence, turbo's engine bay presents itself absolutely like new and 100% bone stock.

Porsche's 2,479cc inline four, basically half of the 928's 5-liter V8, produces 220 teutonic horsepower. It features an advanced Motronic DME, internal ceramic coating, forged pistons and is one of the first cars to have the same power output with or without a catalytic converter.

Clean bottom end - no drips or drops here!

This turbo is accident free, with all its original sheetmetal in place. Coachwork is straight as an arrow, with no dents or scrapes to bemoan.

Standard equipment on the 951 -- and needed for brake clearance -- was Porsche's own phone dial 16" forged alloy wheel. Rims are unmarked and shod with excellent GT RADIAL touring high performance tires all around. Big brakes were lifted straight from the 911, feature 4-piston calipers and 12" rotors.

944 turbo sports boxed fenders a la Audi Ur-Quattro that were immensely popular at the time and still look exciting. Black finish (factory code #LO41) presents itself in extra nice condition throughout. There are no rust bubbles to be found anywhere.

Option code M650 denotes the electric sunroof, which also can be completely removed and stored it its own black, protective bag in the car's roomy trunk. Headliner and sun visors look unmarked.

Turbo cockpit is as amazingly preserved as the car's exterior. Dash is completely free of cracking or warping.

All lights, switches and instruments work flawlessly. The air conditioning system blows ice cold air on demand; even the automatic speed control (option M454) works.

Note option code#431, the small, 363 mm 4-spoke steering wheel.

Seats wear Champagne leather (factory code LQ), and it looks fabulous. There are no stains, rips, tears or any unusual wear beyond the gentle patina to be expected with a vehicle that is 33 years old and has seen very limited use.
Having spent all its life in a climate-controlled garage, the 944's leather is still supple and exudes that intoxicating new-car aroma.

Folding rear seats -- note the lap belts -- have not seen much use. Light gray velour carpeting looks factory fresh.

951's impressive rear. Note original "PORSCHE" script and silver "turbo" emblem. Huge glass hatch features option code #425, the rear window wiper.

Trunk is very large for a sports car, shown here with the protective black roll-up cover in place.

Fine velour carpeting protected the orginal owner's expensive designer luggage (sorry, not included) at all times.

Unused and minty fresh: the full tool roll!

Any way you look at it, even in the nooks and crannies after you remove the trunk carpet, this 944/951 is spotless.
Note unused, original tire jack.

Reference-quality undercarriage, ready for show. Totally unmolested, this car has never been undercoated or been the unfortunate recipient of steam-cleaning or any kind of spray can artistry. Even the factory-applied primer and remnants of the COSMOLINE protective wax are still present.

Fabulously corrosion-free floors.

Wednesday, May 15 was another sunny spring day in our Ventura paradise and we were happy to take the turbo out for a spin, combined with a photo and video session.

Porsche starts, idles, runs, drives, shifts, handles and stops with aplomb. In fact, the influential Car and Driver magazine voted the 944 to be "America's best handling car" in 1986.

Piloting the turbo is sheer excitement. All controls are easy to use, gauges are utterly legible, steering wheel position is much improved over earlier 944s, seats are very supportive, shifting is buttery smooth. You just need to be extra careful with your right foot as the 951 shoots forward like a rocket when the pedal is pushed down hard. No surprise, with 25 psi of turbo boost coming in @ 3,000rpm! At all times, due to the Mitsubishi-sourced, dual counter-rotating balance shafts, the inline 4 runs as silky-smooth as a 6.

Being exceptionally well-built cars by anyone's standard, many turbos were used without compassion, to a point of no return. Those few who withstood the ravages of time -- especially low-mileage examples like this one -- have already become highly desirable collector's items.

This barely used, true two-owner 944/951 turbo, sporting what must be the most desirable color combination, will be a fine addition to any serious Porsche collector's stable. You could look far and wide but might not find another one like it.
