1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Post Coupe Additional Info:

1970 Cutlass S Post Coupe W-31: Unrestored condition with 43,000 original miles. 1 of 116 post coupes made in 1970. Platinum silver (paint code 14) with black stripes and black bench seat interior. Column shift “JO” code automatic transmission. Original numbers matching engine and transmission (see photos). The car originally came with a 3.91 ratio rear end. The gears were subsequently changed to 4.66 gears. There are grind marks where the two letter code should be on the passenger side axle tube, thereby making the code illegible. Possibly when the gears were changed, the code denoting 3.91 was ground off the axle tube. Missing parts include original carburetor, the ram air cleaner top piece (the original metal base is included), and part of the trunk jack. Manual steering and brakes. The original bench seat interior has a few small seam splits in the driver’s area (see photos). Reportedly, the four tires are the original polyglas tires delivered on the car in 1970. The tires hold air, however are poor to fair in condition and should not be driven on.

The original owner ordered the car while serving in the Navy, in Italy. Documentation/paperwork is included with the car. Documentation includes 1.) Navy Exchange Order Letter to General Motors Overseas Distributors Corporation, dated 11/28/69, for 1970 Olds Cutlass Sport Coupe with itemized options, to be delivered to Jack Haggerty Oldsmobile, in Chicago, Illinois. The car was originally ordered in Porcelain White, however the original owner changed the color to Platinum Silver after the original order was placed. The car cost $3,473 brand new; 2.) Letter from General Motors Italia, dated 12/2/69, confirming the order; 3.) Letter from General Motors Overseas Distributors Corporation, dated 12/8/69, stating “We are pleased to advise that we received the order you placed with our oversea distributor for a 1970 General Motors automobile to be delivered to you when you return to the United States”, etc…; 4.) Letter sent via air mail from General Motors Overseas Distributors Corporation, dated 1/9/70, referencing the ordered vehicle, and stating what is included with the W-31 option package. Also included is the statement, “Since you did not indicate a specific axle ratio the automobile is being supplied with a 2.78:1 ratio.” Per the original owner, the car was in fact equipped with a 3.91 axle from new; 5.) Letter from General Motors Oversea Distributors Corporation, dated 1/16/70; 6.) Invoice from General Motors Overseas Distributors Corporation, New York, New York, dated 3/9/70, with all options listed, with RPO codes, including 14 14 Platinum color, 940 black bench seat, A01 tinted glass, BC1 woodgrain instrument panel, B32 auxilary front floor mats, D35 sport mirrors, FE2 442 suspension, G80 limited slip differential, M38 turbo hydra-matic trans, N10 dual exhaust, N34 custom sport steering wheel, N66 custom sport wheel equipment, PK5 5-G70x14 black w/o w/ltr, U35 electric clock, U63 deluxe radio, U80 rear seat speaker, V01 heavy duty radiator, W31 performance package, Y60 convenience group.

The original owner kept the car from 1970 until 1973, when he sold the car to a local friend. The second owner kept the car from 1973 until his passing a few years ago. The second owner kept the car in stock condition for many years, and later in his ownership wanted to see how fast he could make the car. The original 3.91 gears were replaced with 4.66 gears which reportedly are still in place. The original motor ran fine, however (in the pursuit of speed) was pulled at around 42,000 miles and a race Olds 350 motor was installed. The race engine is currently in the car and was built by a professional engine builder who specialized in Oldsmobiles. The race engine was reportedly built to Nascar specs, with 11:1 compression, and a solid lifter camshaft from a specialist in California. The car has run 12.7@107 with the race engine. Both the race engine (in the car) and the original engine are included in the sale.

The paint is a combination of original paint and touched up areas. The original paint had areas that were significantly faded, and those areas were recently fogged to improve the cars appearance. The driver’s fender has been replaced at some point in the cars life. This is not a national meet show car. The paint has numerous marks and flaws from use over 48 years. The car was retired very early in its life from daily driver duty. See photos for rust areas on the car. If you are looking for a show car, then the car would need to be repainted.The underside of the car is solid. The car currently has headers and the exhaust system ends under the passenger compartment area. The car is loud and fast. The original exhaust manifolds and original aluminum intake manifold are included with the sale.

This car is not an Olds 442 model. The W-31 was built off the Cutlass platform.
