1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cutlass S Convertible Additional Info:

For Sale is a 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Convertible. This car is in driving condition today as I drive it occasionally to keep the fluids moving and gaskets tight.

However, it is a nothing more than a driver and for most purposes a “Project Car” that currently runs/drives. Though not recommended for the rain, holes in top.

I bought the car in late 2008 with intention of restoring like the '68 I had in High School and for the rag top for the wife. Well those plans changedover the years.

Optioned with:
- Soft Ray glass
- AM/FM stereo/CD player

Engine / Transmission:
The engine and transmission are very good and reliable. Transmission does noes slip and engine does not smoke or use oil. Allegedly, they were rebuilt before I bought the car about 9yrs ago. No supporting paperwork.

Engine is original numbers match 350 2bbl, with rebuilt carb.

Transmission is not numbers match, but filter and gasket have been changed. It is a correct 1968 GM Olds transmission 2 speed.

To date, some gaskets, rubber lines, spark plugs, fluids, greased ball joints & suspension etc., have been replaced/lubricated. Entire cooling system was fully flushed from radiator through block and heater core. 4 new gas shocks installed

Tires:
Tires (with 1/2” whitewalls turned inside) have been replaced about 2 months ago, so they have maybe 10 miles on them. 70K mile rating. Wheels are 14x6 SSIII, 1976 model version, snap-on cap. The new tires will fit the correct 14x6 SSII 1968/69 wheels if you can locate them.
Interior:

The interior is in moderate condition and original, except replaced carpet. It has been cleaned. The dash has one crack right side above the glove box. There are three cracks in the steering wheel, one at each spoke. The center console door has small hairline crack. The headliner and all door panels are poor, but the carpet is good. They are new modern rubber floor mats.

Body:
The red paint is in poor condition. Fully polished and waxed. Original color was Saffron Yellow. There are several minor nicks in paint, typical from the bondo that is coming apart from the metal. Bondo is in every panel except maybe the trunk lid as best I can tell. All the chrome trim varies in condition, with some minor pitting in the door handles, etc. Some of the fender stainless will need repair or replacement. The bumpers do show some wear of a car this age. The weather stripping is worn and does leak when you wash the car, and is OEM. The convertible vinyl top only protects you from sun and wind, though it does work automatically to raise and lower top.

Electric:
Most everything works as it should electrically; stop lights, turn signals, parking lights, interior lights, headlights etc. OEM radio not connected. Current AM/FM CD Player functions fully. The wiper motor does not function. Dash clock does not function.

New Items Installed are:

  • battery
  • starter solenoid
  • oil and filter
  • repaired exhaust
  • 4 new tires
  • 4 new shocks
  • belts
  • water hoses
  • spark plugs
  • points and rotor and voltage regulator
  • transmission gasket & filter
  • new fuel pump
  • new fuel hoses
  • new water temp gauge
  • new steering box
  • new rag joint
  • correct manual antenna for 1968

The car starts up and runs beautifully with absolutely no smoke. I drive the car only on sunshine days ~50 miles from my house around and back without any problems. The transmission shifts perfect. Some small leaks from transmission pan when sitting over a few weeks, right hand side, after replacement of filter and pan gasket.

General:

All in all, this is not a daily driver (in the case of rain). It is a weekend or occasional only driver, not during rain, project car that runs and drives.

The car has all of its OEM original glass & original correct jack in the back.

Please feel free to email me with any questions. Thank you for your time.

Model Overview 0" ng-include="" src="'/apps/valuationtools/Content/partials/gallery.partial.html'">
History of the 1968-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Oldsmobile's fully redesigned 1968 Cutlass models were built on two wheelbases—112 inches for 2-door “Cutlass S” styles and 116 inches for Cutlass/Cutlass Supreme 4-doors.

Following up on the somewhat quirky 1968 styling, Cutlass designers developed a frontal appearance for '69 that would, with annual variation, mark the popular Cutlass through 1972. Revamped body panels and new rooflines followed in 1970.

While most 1968-72 Cutlass buyers chose the V-8 series’ standard 350-cid engine, a very limited number selected the inline six, offered through 1971.

During 1968-71, the 4-4-2 was a separate performance series. Oldsmobile spurred interest in Cutlass performance with niche offerings such as the 1970-71 SX, powered by a 455 V-8, and the 1970 Rallye, with a 325-hp 350 V8 under the hood. In 1972, the 4-4-2 became a Cutlass handling/appearance package, available with any offered V-8.

These cars are typically excellent performers that demonstrate the qualities and engineering that would drive Oldsmobile to third place in the industry by 1972. Sharing many parts with highly collectible 4-4-2 models, the 1968-72 Cutlasses are well served by reproduction parts vendors.

Hagerty Vehicle Valuation:

Value = #4 Fair/poor $11,400

#4 vehicles are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the body has a minor dent. Split seams or a cracked dash, where applicable, might be present. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or other non- stock additions might be present. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 vehicle.
