The elegant 220SE was the first two-door example of the W111 chassis model and was the last of the truly hand-crafted Mercedes passenger cars. Unlike other automobiles, these cars were classics the day they rolled off their special production line, and have remained so ever since.

The 220SE was introduced in February 1961 and was considered to be an immediate success. Road & Track magazine called this model "one of the best-looking body designs to come from any German concern." The exquisitely proportioned and elegant coachwork was created by Mercedes Head of Design Friedrich Geiger, who was also personally responsible for designing the famous pre-war 500/540K sports-cars and the immortal 300SL “Gullwing”; the car was meticulously hand-built on its own separate production line at the leisurely rate of only 13 examples per week.
