1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL 6.0 AMG 500 SL 6.0 AMG Pre Merger Additional Info:

This RoW 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL 6.0 AMG is one of about 50 pre-merger AMG units made, before Daimler Benz took over of AMG.

With very low miles and outstanding fully serviced condition, this Affalterbach Euro R129 masterpiece is a stunning Roadster to be added to any Mercedes-Benz collection.

Driving the car, displays a performance delivery well beyond the expected anemic stock pre facelift R129 M119 engine and transmission combination.

Pre-Merger GT: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG 6.0

This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL (VINWDB1290661F017341) is a pre-merger AMG 6.0 example, one of about 50 made before moves to take the tuner fully in-house began around 1993. Reportedly ordered new by a member of the Jordanian royal family, the car somehow ended up in Japan where it remained for some time before making its way to the West Coast. With an extra liter of displacement, the quad-cam V8 was rated at 380 hp and 428 lb. ft. of torque from new, improvements of around 60 and 100, respectively, and while bone-stock 500s were already quick, capable GTs, this AMG-tuned model be even faster with a derestricted 165 mph top speed and the ability to sprint to 60 in around five seconds flat. Mileage is given as the equivalent of ~22k miles, and we really like this car’s blue-black color and matched monoblock wheels.

The R129 SL replaced the long-runningR107, and was produced from 1989 until 2001 with a minor facelift and other evolutionary changes occurring along the way. AMG was involved from the beginning, and would produce special performance variants all the way through production, including theSL60, SL70, and SL73. These 6.0s were the first R129 AMG offering, using a bored and stroked version of the standard MB M119 5.0 liter V8. The car’s bodykit (front and rear bumpers, side skirts( is relatively subtle, leaving most of the talking to be done by color-matched monoblock wheels, a ride height drop, a lip spoiler, and what’s sure to be a more aggressive bark from the exhaust pipes..

Blue-black code 199 paint is a great color offered on European market Cosworth 190E 2.3 and 2.5s, and is one of our favorite period MB colors for the way it changes under different lighting conditions. There’s no model designation or Mercedes star on the back, but dual square exhaust tips offer visual hints, too. The soft top appears to be in nice shape when fitted against the windshield header, and the trunk lid is an ROW unit with a wider recess for European registration plates.

Glossy wood trim surrounds interior occupants and lines the cabin on the door panels, center console and instrument panel, though really we prefer the relatively restrained use of burl in standard cars. Headrests are also listed as a special variant on the build sheet, but everything else looks pretty close to standard here, including seats, factory tape deck, steering wheel and more. The analog odometer displays the kilometric equivalent of 22k miles, while wear and light creasing on the leather of the driver’s seat seems commensurate. Interestingly, this SL is fitted with (small) belted rear seats as opposed to the storage shelf in US-market versions.

Here’s the 6.0 liter quad-cam 32-valve V8, which developed 380 horsepower and 428 lb. ft. of torque when new, up from 322 and 332, respectively, for the standard 500SL. The engine looks perfectly at home within the bay under the correct AMG plastic shrouding, and the seller mentions a recent servicing without going into detail. Recently replaced Continental tires measure 235 section front and 255 rear.

Many sources report that just a few hundred AMG-tuned R129s were made before production ramped up substantially with the next generation. Although the post-merger SL60 is the most common variant, these pre-merger 6.0 versions are rare, with just about 50 split between European and Japanese markets.

Acceleration and launch are swift and impressive, consistent to an AMG tuned car. While on cornering and turning, the car is precise and a true high-performance sports car. The body roll is marginal, and you can easily bring it to torque steer around the bends. While a stock R129 behaves more like Dr. Jekyll, this AMG work of art is a true Mr. Hyde.

The story of this particular 500SL AMG 6.0 is that it was a unique special order, that came from the Jordanian Royal Family in Amman, Jordan.

The specific order originated with Mercedes Benz Commission No. 0 0 843 10114 which assigned assembly to their Bremen, Germany facility.

The order came in the Summer of 1990 with completion taking place on September 2nd, 1990. The original Mercedes Factory Assembly Records provide fantastic detail on the special options incorporated into this vehicle’s assembly.

After competition at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Bremen, this car was shipped to AMG’s facilities in Affalterbach, for conversion to AMG 6.0 specifications. These modifications included increasing the bore and stroke with special AMG Rods, pistons and hardened steel crankshaft which increased displacement from the stock 5.0-liters to 5,955cc (6.0-liters.) The modifications increased engine output to an astounding 380BHP and 428ft-lb at just 3,750rp.

Additional modifications performed in Affalterbach include:

-300 Km/h AMG Speedometer and odometer

-AMG Aero

-AMG Aero 18-inch wheels (Hammer)

-AMG tuned suspension

-AMG exhaust
