What makes this particular 280SL stand out from the rest is not only that this is TRUE EUROPEAN 280SL Model with RARE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE MANUAL TRANSMISSION and 6 Cylinder 2.8 liter engine, BUT this Mercedes was one of the very first R107 280SL cars ever built!!!

It is a production number 54 which makes it one of the very first R107 280SL’s Mercedes that rolled of the production line and offered for sale!!!

Even though titled as 1976 (clerical typo when it was imported to California back in 1989) this is one of the first 280SL’s EVER MADE due to its very low production number (54) and the fact that it is Bosch D-Jet electronic fuel injection SL (all early R107’s from 1972-1975 featured D-Jet Fuel injection and 1976 onward models SL’s were switched to mechanical Bosch CIS fuel injection). 280SL production started in May of 1974 and ran all the way to August of 1985.

When you think about it, about first 50 or so cars were destroyed as they were used for crash testing and various research and development, some cars were given to very important MB people and customers, so being production number 54, it is one of the first R107 SL’s that was ever offered for sale to public!!! You definitively can’t say that for many R107 cars out there!!!

Every car collector knows that most valuable cars are usually very first, and very last models produced!! This baby is one of those highly desirable cars!!!

Owning a Mercedes SL gives a person a real driving enjoyment and pride of ownership. When these cars were first manufactured, Mercedes-Benz adhered to construction methods that resulted in a standard that was the envy of the automotive industry. Every Mercedes-Benz model shared a build quality second to none.

About the car:

This SL was imported to California in 1989 and used and driven as a daily driver until 2004 when its owner moved and retired back home in Tennessee. Shortly after its owner moved back, he started to experience some health issues and car was parked in his barn and hasn’t moved for the past 15+ years.

Engine spins freely by hand, but it doesn’t start as the car was sitting long time. It will need to be gone through, gas tank and fuel lines cleaned, tune up performed, and other mechanicals attended to before its started up and any driving done. Good thing that this is early D- Jet Fuel injection model, and fuel system is much more simpler than the later CIS mechanically fuel injected cars.

It comes with HIGHLY Desirable 4-speed manual transmission.

We are selling it as a non-runner, but it does roll, steers and brakes with no problems.

This Mercedes is a fun project, and it is perfect for somebody who wants to do a full restoration, and have a wonderful show car and the investment, especially being a SUPER EARLY 280SL! Walkaround:

Astral Silver Metallic (paint Code 735 astralsilber) shows its age and it will need to be repainted so this beauty can shine once again in its full glory!!!

Body is nice and straight, and undercarriage is all original and unmolested, but there is some rust here and there.

Interior is all complete and for 45 year old SL, its very presentable. Seats are in great condition and they are comfortable and supportive! Dash is also in great condition with no cracks or plastic covers on it.

Original VIN Number stamping is still present in the radiator support showing originality of this SL!!

All in all this is a very nice and complete SL that can make a very nice and fun project, and great return on your investment! This is NOT a missing parts, molested project car that you will never get your money out of!!

Just add to the equation its desirable color combination, short European Bumpers (they sell alone for $2,500), one piece European Headlights ($2,000) its SUPER EARLY production number, manual transmission, and you will immediately realize that It really doesn’t get any better than this – a true and VERY SPECIAL EUROPEAN R107SL!!!
