1988 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Additional Info:

Excellent condition 1988 Mercedes 420SEL. Anthracite gray (color code 172) with grey leather interior. The last classic Mercedes S-class. Everything is original (paint, engine, trans), and everything works (a/c, climate, seats, windows, sunroof, radio, antenna). 96000 original miles. The factory plastic is still on the carpets. No body rust at all.
3-owner car. I purchased car 4 years ago from 2nd owner. First owner put 60,000 miles on it; second owner put 1,000 miles on it; I put 35,000 highway miles on it. I purchased car for sole purpose of the summer highway trips. Always garage kept.
I have maintained the car as a daily driver despite using it as a highway/Saturday night dinner car. I have all service records. The first owner only needed a battery, flat tire repair, and a/c recharge. During my ownership, the car has only need age-related items (rubber suspension parts, shocks, tires, antenna grommet, EHA valve, etc.). I own several classic/antique Mercedes and believe in over-maintaining them to ensure reliable operation as designed, so oil is every 3k miles, and all other fluids have been changed during my ownership at least once (trans, differential, brake). The only "major" repair was a leaking caliper, which I simply had replaced rather than repair. I also make sure the idle control valve is thoroughly cleaned with every oil change. This car has never had any issues, and has always started immediately. The body is entirely rust free as prior owners lived in the south, is 100% garage kept, and not driven in winter weather.
The original paint is in excellent condition, with typical blemishes for a 30 year old car driven on the highway. There is an extremely small chip in the windshield, and the prior owner touched up a scratch near the antenna and a couple of pea-sized chips near the trunk lid.
When I wasn't looking, my 8 pound dog made a few bite marks in the center storage tray when she was a few months old. I have forgiven her, but the marks are still slightly visible.
Selling because I recently restored my father's 300SDL, and although I love this car, two w126 cars take up a lot of garage space.
Happy to send additional pictures and answer any questions. This car truly provides the most enjoyable highway ride from a Mercedes, and the best mix of classic styling and modern comfort.
I trust that a buyer will benefit from this car's great condition, regular maintenance, and the fact that it has been driven (rather than sitting and collecting dust). Nonetheless, it is 30 years old and being sold as is. Please feel free to come view and drive the car.
