Introduced in 1989 to replace the venerable but aging previous generation of SL that had been in production since 1972, the R129 was a technological tour de force when it was first introduced. Chock full of interesting technological, convenience, and safety features, the car was highly sought after and thoroughly modern. The 5.0 liter V8 provided 322hp and an unmistakable (but not too intrusive) V8 soundtrack, as well as 155mph top speed, while safety features such as airbags, ABS, and a pop up rollover hoop provided the level of safety expected of a Mercedes-Benz. Luxury features were abundant as well, with abundant electric accessories (seats, windows, top, locks, mirrors), automatic climate control, and the like. The design would remain the same with occasional updates until 2002, representing a typically long production run characteristic of Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
This particular example is a single-owner California car from 1991 onward, and importantly, is accompanied by records detailing service for nearly its entire life, as well as the factory hard top. To-date the car has covered just 90,004 miles, and it is in excellent mechanical order. It is corrosion and damage free, and displays excellent driver’s level cosmetics inside and out. The majority of the paint appears original. The interior appears to be entirely original. The headliner material on the hard top is showing its age a bit.
