ASC (American Sunroof Company) McLaren Mustang History

Starting in 1987 through 1990 there were only 1,806 McLaren Mustang's produced. These cars were purchased from the Ford Motor Co and sent to McLaren for a very unique conversion to be completed. Starting in "87" adjustments were made to the existing electrically fuel-injected engine that boosted the output from the previous year's 200 hp to 225. This was achieved by the installation of larger intake plenum, a 60mm throttle body, 9.0:1 compression forged pistons, and Ford truck cylinder heads. Here are some additional upgrades that were included in this build:

-100.5" wheelbase
-Honeycomb mesh, cast-aluminum, 15" wheels
-Manually-folding convertible top
-Power metal tonneau cover
-Windshield pulled back about 20 degrees
-Side skirts, tail lamp covers, rear spoiler
-Removed stock emblems
-Rear seat removed
-Extra padding on front seats with embroidered leather

While this was a limited production vehicle there is still a huge collection of ASC/McLaren specific parts for anyone who needs restoration parts to maintain the vehicle.

As a side note, this McLaren Mustang is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our classics come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the McLaren Mustang, just give us a call.

The Guards Red exterior is in excellent driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has a terrific gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Both doors open and shut nicely. The convertible top has been replaced and looks almost brand new, we have provided a picture of the invoice from when the top was replaced. The original McLaren wheels are in excellent condition with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. The Dunlop tires have plenty of tread left and are correctly sized 215/60R15. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some very tiny blemishes that were too small to show up in the pictures, but nothing that is really noticeably from about five or ten feet away. We have included specific photos of the rear spring mounts, rockers, lower quarter panels, and the area's most prone to rust to show how nice this car looks.

The Gray Leather interior in this McLaren Mustang is in great condition. The seats are in good shape and look in person just as they do in the photos with unique design and stitching. The carpet is also in great condition with no holes or tears. The gauge faces are crisp and clean and the lenses are crystal clear. The door panels are in good shape overall and the door pulls are solid and intact. The dash and console are in great condition with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The jack and jack handle are still with the car. The original space saver spare is still with the car and has never been used. This McLaren Mustang has never been smoked in; there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes.
Mustang interiors from this era are not known to wear well, and the excellent condition of this interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life.

This Mustang seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles smooth. It drives great and feels nice on the road and at highway speeds. In the video in this ad one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations or strange noises and the car performs quite well overall. The brakes do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the power band. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The car runs cool and does not overheat. This Mustang has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, and correct as one can see in the photos.

The horn works as do all the exterior lights, interior lights, wipers, power windows, and power locks. All of the gauges work. The blower for the heater and a/c works on all speeds. The a/c also works and blows cold. One can observe the a/c compressor clicking on and engaging properly in the video. The convertible top also works well with no effort or binding in the mechanism. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the top down on a beautiful day.

Also, please note in the video that all of the warning lights work properly. They light up when the key is first turned on and then go off when the engine is started. There are no "check engine" or other warning lights that stay on. Often times these warning light bulbs will have been removed to mask other problems. As one can observe in the video the warning lights on this car operates just as they should, going on with the car as a check and then going off when the engine is started.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1987 McLaren Mustang is in magnificent driver condition. The exceptionally rarity, low miles, the beautiful original color combination, and the excellent overall condition make this car especially important and nearly impossible to duplicate. It is very hard to find a McLaren Mustang from this era that is still in great original condition with low mileage as most were used, abused, or modified. This McLaren Mustang always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of Fox body Mustangs increased considerably over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
