I****READ ITEM DESCRIPTION FULLY BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS OR BIDDING!***
THIS IS A HIGH OPTION WONDERFULLY EQUIPPED 1972 MUSTANG MACH 1 Q CODE 351 4V COBRA JET MUSTANG MACH 1 'BELIEVED' TO HAVE IT'S ORIGINAL MATCHING NUMBERS DRIVETRAIN INTACT! (THE CARB IS NOT ORIGINAL TO VEHICLE).- SEE MARTI REPORT, LAST PICTURE.
I PURCHASED THIS MUSTANG APPROXIMATELY 4 MONTHS AGO. I HAVE A CLEAR NON SALVAGE ARKANSAS TITLE IN MY NAME.
AS SEEN FROM THE MARTI REPORT, THIS IS A PDB, PS, AC, A/T, 3.25 EQUIPPED OPEN REAR, 351 CLEVELAND 4V MACH.
UPON PURCHASE, I LUGGED THE BEAST HOME WITH THE POWERTRAIN OUT OF CAR BUT PRESENT. THE P.O. HAD REMOVED THE ENGINE/TRANSMISSION, WHICH WERE STORED INDOORS, PREPATORY TO A REBUILD, WHICH HE NEVER STARTED. I IMMEDIATELY SET ATTEMPING TO VERIFY THE P.O. CLAIMS THAT THE DRIVETRAIN WAS MATCHING NUMERS. VERIFICATION WAS CONFIRMED BY THE FACT THAT THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE WERE STAMPED WITH THE SEQUENTIAL VIN NUMBERS OF "149759" (SEE ATTACHED CLOSE UP PHOTO'S AND VIN NUMBER). ADDITIONALLY, THE ID TAG ON THE 9" DIFFERENTIAL CASE BOLT (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO) MATCHES THE MARTI REPORT OF A 3.25 OPEN REAR CARRIER. INTAKE MANIFOLD IS A D1 PART NUMBER AS WELL.
INITIAL EFFORTS TO ROTATE THE CRANK BOLT BY BREAKER BAR SHOWED THAT IT WOULD ONLY GO ONE WAY. MY GURU MECHANIC FRIEND (WHO I'M NOW CONVINCED IS PSYCHIC REGARDING HOT ROD MATTERS) IMMEDIATELY PRONOUNCED, 'IT SUCKED A BOLT DOWN THE INTAKE'. SURE ENOUGH, AFTER PULLING THE DRIVER CYLINDER HEAD, WE FOUND A CRUMPLED AIR CLEANER STUD AGAINST THE PISTON WALL (SEE CLOSE UP PIC AND THAT OF CYLINDER HEAD WITH SPARK PLUG DAMAGE). WE ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE WAS STANDARD BORE WITH SMOOTH CYLINDER WALLS! THE CYLINDER WITH THE DAMAGED SPARK PLUG HAD SOME LIGHT IMPRINT ON TOP OF THE PISTON, NO DAMAGE COULD BE FELT BY HAND AGAINST THE CYLINDER WALL SURFACE. WE REPLACED THE DAMAGED PLUG : )
MY PSYCHIC ADVISOR, (I MEAN KEN), THEN STATED, 'THIS ENGINE WILL RUN'.
AFTER REMOVING THE OFFENDING STUD AND REPLACING THE HEAD,HE REPLACED THE SACKED CARB ON IT WITH A USED HOLLY, AND SURE ENOUGH, IT FIRED UP AND RAN (NO UNUSUAL DRIVETRAIN NOISE NOTED). WE ONLY RAN IT ABOUT 15-20 SECONDS AND HAD TO GRAVITY FEED GASOLINE DOWN TO IT AS THE FUEL PUMP WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. WE HOT WIRED IT DIRECT TO GAIN SPARK. THE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE COLUMN WITH KEY, BUT I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO POWER ANYTHING UP WITH IT. THE PROPELLER SHAFT IS PRESENT AND ATTACHED TO THE REAR YOLK. THE BRAKES GO TO THE FLOOR AND ARE NON OPERATIONAL AS FAR AS STOPPING POWER.
SO, HERE IS WHAT I KNOW. THIS MACH, IS BELIEVED (NOT WARRANTEED) TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL DRIVETRAIN, ENGINE, TRANS, DIFFERENTIAL, INTAKE/EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. IT HAS THE TACH DASH INSTRUMENT CUSTER, WITH THE ENGINE APPEARING TO BE STANDARD BORE. THE CARB WHICH WAS ON THE ENGINE IS NOT ORIGINAL (D4 BUILD DATE). AND WILL NOT ALLOW THE BEAST TO RUN (SACKED ACCELERATOR PUMP-WE ARE NOT INCLUDING THE REBUILT UNIT WE GOT IT TO RUN WITH).
THE ORIGINAL DSO IS COLORADO AND IT STILL HAS COLORADO PLATES. THE MACH APPEARS TO HAVE A REPLACE MENT DRIVER FENDER AND LOOKS TO HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE REPAINT OR PARTIAL REPAINT OF IT'S ORIGINAL 'BRIGHT LIME' (SEE MARTI). THE REAR DRIVER TRUNK SHEETMETAL CHANNEL SHOWS A DATE CODE (SEE PHOTO) AS DO MANY COMPONENTS. I HAVE ALSO ATTACHED PHOTO OF THE BLOCK DATE CODE BEFORE WE REINSTALLED IT. THE FRONT WINDSHIELD IS A CARLITE SCRIPT UNIT, LIKELY ORIGINAL AS WELL.
MAKE NO MISTAKE, THIS IS NO TRAILER QUEEN, NOR REPRESENTED AS SUCH. IT WILL NEED LOWER QUARTER PATCHES AND PROBABLY FULL FLOOR PANS. I BELIEVE ALL THE TORQUE BOXES AND FRAME RAILS ARE SOLID AND CAN BE UTILIZED. I CAN ONLY POST 24 PICS, SO, ASK FOR ADDITIONAL AREAS IF YOU NEED THEM.
HOWEVER, BEFORE BID, ASK YOURSELF THIS. HOW MANY 46 Y/O MACH'S WILL YOU FIND WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE, A MATCHING NUMBERS LOW MILEAGE DRIVETRAIN (NO IDEA IF THE ODOMETER HAS ROLLED OVER, BUT THE STANDARD BORE ARGUES AGAINST IT). I HAVE PERSONALLY, PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED MACH'S THAT WERE GUARANTEED TO BE MATCHING NUMBERS (BY A CERTIFIED MUSTANG JUDGE NO LESS IN ONE CASE), WHICH PROVED TO HAVE INCORRECT TRANMISSIONS AND DIFFERENTIALS. THE MORAL IS, TRUST NO ONE! LOOK AT THE VERIFICATION OF THIS CAR AND THEN DECIDE WHAT IT'S WORTH. THIS MACH HAS ABOUT AS MUCH VERIFICATION AS ANY I'VE OWNED AND THE PICTURES PROVE IT'S HERITAGE AND ORIGINALITY. THERE ARE SIMPLY NOT MANY OUT THERE ANY MORE WITH ORIGINAL DRIVETRAINS.
WITH REGARD TO OBVIOUS FLAWS, THE TRANS CABLE IS MISSING SO I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO THE VIABILITY OF THE AUTO TRANSMISION. ALL GLASS LOOKS GOOD, NO FRONT GRLLE, THE LOWER CORE SUPPORT BOTTOM BRACE ON PASSENGER SIDE IS BOWED FORWARD (SEE ENGINE PIC, #11). I DON'T BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO COLLISION, BUT PROBABLY FROM SOMEONE HOOKING ONTO IT AND PULLING IT OUTWARD/FORWARD. RADIATOR LOOKS TO BE ORIGINAL, HAS STICKERS, UNDERSIDE OF NASA HOOD HAS SOME RUST THROUGH.
SHIPPING AND ARRANGEMENT OF SAME AT BUYERS EXPENSE. VEHICLE SHOULD BE PICKED UP WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF PURCHASE, FULL PAYMENT DUE WITHIN 7 DAYS OF PURCHASE. IF YOU ARRANGE CONTRACT SHIPPING, ENSURE YOU INFORM THE HAULER THAT THE VEHICLE IS NON OP AND WITH NO STOPPING POWER.
I WILL BE HAPPY TO DISCUSS ANY DETAILS OF THE VEHICLE.
