"In 1965 Ford Motor Car Division decided to introduce a new engine, using the FE block from the 352, 360 and 390 ci engines. This new powerplant would sport 428 ci, and would be a high torque, streetable big block. It was dubbed the "Thunderbird 7-Litre " and was slotted to appear on some of the 1966 models. Fords executives decided that what better way to introduce the engine than to create a special marque to showcase it. Using a Galaxie 500, with an XL Interior, some added features and some custom badges, the FORD 7-Litre was born. It was available in either Hardtop or Convertible, in either automatic or 4 speed transmission. Marketed as the "Quietest Quick Car, or the Quickest Quiet Car", the car offered a combination of comfort and muscle. "
It's been estimated that there were only 428 7-Litres produced in 1966 that were 4-speed cars and convertibles. The exact number and breakdown of how they were equipped is unknown as the records no longer exist, but many of these cars have rotted away, or had their drive trains cannibalized for other projects. These factory performance sleepers are truly a rare find.
Up for sale is my very rare 1966 GALAXIE 7-LITRE CONVERTIBLE WITH 428 ENGINE AND 4-SPEED TOPLOADER. This runs, the transmission works and I have a title in my name.
As previously stated, my 7-Litre is a rare 4-speed convertible and is believed to have all original equipment besides what appears to be a replacement mirror on the driver's side. It has a Michigan title in my name. The only reason I am selling is I have a couple of other projects that are taking longer to complete than I hoped they would, and I hate to leave this sit.
It was driven onto the trailer when I moved it into storage one year ago, so the engine did run and idle, and the transmission and clutch performed well without any issue. The power top also works flawlessly, and was put up and down before going into storage. All glass is present and in good condition, and the interior is complete and while it does show some wear and there is a mildew smell, it is in exceptional original condition. Good dash pads, good upholstery, and only one small tear on the corner of the driver's door card. The console is in good shape and the original 4-speed console plate is present. This is a power steering and power disc brake car, however the brakes do not work.
Unfortunately, as with many Galaxies in '66, the frame is shot. I do have another Convertible frame that I have purchased and have nearly completed repairs to it, and should be ready for blasting and finishing to the next owners tastes shortly.
It also suffers from the same rust issues that many '66s do as well.There is rust around the rear wheel wells, in the decklid, in the doors, on the bottoms of the fenders and in the trunk. There are also some soft spots in the floor pans. I have original replacement metal for all areas of rust including two quarter panels from California, two doors, two fenders, a deck lid, a firewall (which I don't think is needed), front wheel houses, a trunk pan (needs a little work at the edges, but I have the patches for that), a complete 1-piece front floor pan that runs from the toe pans back to the front of the rear pan and a 1-piece rear pan that runs from the center of the floor back to under the rear seat (these can be installed whole, or used to patch the areas of rust), a good core front and rear bumper, lots of extra brackets, trim and glass.
The original dash tag and cowl stampings are in place, but the door tag apparently went missing many years ago when the vehicle was repainted. Pulling back the carpet under the rear seat revealed that this was originally a red car. I have started removing the original carpet which is not shown in the pictures. I did this to verify condition of the pans up by the firewall.
This is a project, and there is a lot to be done, but locating the hard to get parts that tend to hold these restorations up has already been done. This is an exceptional vehicle to restore. The vehicle is being stored off-site, so if you are a serious buyer, arrangements will need to be made to inspect the vehicle. I am serious in my interest to sell this project, but I don't have to sell it.
This vehicle is presently in cheap, clean, dry, indoor storage (I pay roughly $45 per month) and can remain there for an extended period of time if you want to continue the storage contract, however all of the extra parts are stored at my home and arrangements must be made to have them picked up. Also, payment still must be made in full and an the title transferred within 7 days.
