1972 Datsun Z-Series Additional Info:

Datsun enthusiasts.. It's with great pain in my heart.. That you see today, my all time best Z car find.. I've continually owned 240/260's for over 25 years.. I've owned dozens, and this is the holy grail.
A little back history on the car. I found this amazing spectacle in the Portland area. The original owners' 83 year old brother was selling it. His brother bought the car new (in 72), drove it up until 78, at which time he apparently became quite successful. He paid off the lien on the Datsun, he then began collecting several sports cars.. Eventually a warehouse was needed to house them... and a guy to take care of them all. This 240Z was his earliest sports car, and his pride of the pack. He continued to store the Z (WITHOUT A BATTERY IN IT!!) and no longer drove it. It was last registered in 78.. Only tacking on 6 years of use. The odometer shows 62 or 63K on it. Most cars, including this one, are difficult or impossible to document miles, condition, authentic one owner (copy of original title included), and the original license plates (with last registration card, showing plate number included), and a working odometer, is what I have to support the claim of original miles.. Obviously, this is not a guarantee, as it is impossible for me to know for sure.. But, I'd bet a lot of $$ that they are original miles. Regardless, it sure shows as a car with 62K on it. The inside looks like it was pulled right from the 70's.. The original owner continued to collect cars and have them kept up by his "guy" until 2004, when he suffered a stroke that necessitated a move into a specialized care facility. He was still alive at the time I purchased this in 2013. His cars were sold off and distributed throughout his family. In 2004, his brother took possession and it was parked in a windowless 1 car garage in Portland, where his brother (who was clearly not a "car guy") looked after it. He never drove it. Just kept it under the same car cover his brother did. It is kept in my garage under the same old cover (included).
When I found the car.. My jaw dropped. The feeling of finding your "dream Z".. And it is just that. Must be the right color, to qualify for such a famed title. Persimmon, Or Nissan 110 "red", has always been my favorite color these cars were ever built in.
I trailer'd the car back to Salt Lake City and began to carefully go through it. I replaced much of the brake system, including NOS rear wheel cylinders. The front got rebuilt calipers, new rotors, wheel bearings, ball joints, pads, a lot of bushings, etc. The car didn't have a tank full of stinky rotten gas, so it was quite easy to bring it back to life. I did go through the carbs, balance them, adjust the valves, points etc. I put a new radiator in it as the early ones were barely adequate when new.
After some time in the garage caressing it, cuddling it, and turning wrenches.. It was time for a drive. I have never driven a Z that is so fine on the road. It is amazing. It retains the entire factory exhaust, including the muffler and it is just quiet and smooth as can be. I remember when I was doing the ball joints, thinking I should do new struts.. I'm sure glad I didn't... Whatever is in it, are the smoothest, nicest ride quality struts I have ever experienced. I'd sure like to know if they are originals or what they are. It takes railroad tracks like no other Z I have driven.
Before, I let the pictures do the rest of the talking.. Note, that as a veteran Z car enthusiast/owner, I tried to capture the areas people who know these cars will want to see. There is no evidence of ANY paint work or previous collision damage. His brother did not know what had happened to left rear corner. The roof is a straight and nice as I've ever seen. The car has no dealer installed door moldings, so there are door dings throughout. The paint is glossy and THICK. I've been mostly interested in original paint cars for the past 10 years.. and this one has a thick coat of paint on it.. not getting thin anywhere. There is more factory paint runs in the engine bay, than I have ever seen on a Z. The paint shows signs of ageing that especially common with red pigmented paints. Some discoloration and stone chips exist, primarily on hood and right fender. No bird dropping damage.. No birds in the garage.. No dealer installed AC, so no additional holes in the firewall. Nothing out of the ordinary beyond the rear corner. The battery area from any way you look at it, is very clean. I have pics of it with the battery out on my old phone.. Nice. Floors are mint, topside, bottom side.. the end of the passenger side frame rail (under the floor), is a critical area to eyeball on these cars, battery acid travels down the inside of them and exits there.. Not this one. See pic. Original carpets show no sun fade... and virtually, no wear, other than the drivers side floor. It is very worn. DASH HAS NO CRACKS.. I had the seats re-upholstered, using MSA's kit. The rest of the interior is excellent and original. Original shift boot, console, etc. Etc, in this case, means, original tool kit, still in plastic, with inventory paper, several receipts from the 70's.. and just a 70's feel. Original radio works, and the electric antennae motor works, but the plastic drive cord must be broken, as its stuck in the up position. All lights and accessories work (except the clock, not sure about rear de-fogger). The car was not subject to cigarette smoke and retains a musty new car smell.. with the help of a vintage Marilyn Monroe, naughty air freshener. Looking in places that are hard to capture in photo's, like up above the pedals, and various nooks and crannies, it is amazing. Like new for the most part. Did I mention, original key?
