1971 Datsun Z-Series Additional Info:

Up for auction is this 1971 Datsun 240Z Series I project car, VIN# HLS30-07184 is a great candidate for a complete restoration and comes with the car's original numbers-matching L24 engine block (see picture #11).
Series I 240Zs are very much in demand today and clean, fully-restored Series I cars with their original numbers-matching engines can go for as much as $50k or greater at auction.
Please note that the VIN reflects that the car was built in July of 1970, but was registered as a 1971. I am not sure why this is, but after talking to some other longtime 240Z owners, it could have been a clerical error that was made many years ago or Nissan may not have delivered the car to the dealership until after 8/31/70, which is the last day of the 1970 model year. It will be the responsibility of the auction winner if they wish to contact their local DMV to see if the car can be re-registered to a 1970 model car, as its VIN reflects that the car was built in July of 1970.
The car currently has an L28 engine with dual Weber carbs and a 4-speed transmission. As previoulsy mentioned, the original numbers-matching L24 engine block is included with the sale (see picture #11).
Picture #7 shows the 5-digital odometer with 70173 miles. Given that the car is almost 50 years old, I would assume that the odometer has turned over.
According to the previous owner, the car has been garaged most of its life. The car has brand new radial tires. All of its original Nissan glass, including windshield, door window glass, quarter window glass and rear hatch glass with vertical defroster lines, all in good shape. The stainless steel trim above the door windows and the stainless steel top window moldings with rubber a.k.a."squeegees"that attach to where the doors meet the door glass are both in good shape. The car's original rear tail lights are also in good condition with no flaking of the plastic chrome center pieces.
Please note that for the last several years, the car has sat in a garage and has not been driven. When I had the new tires installed, the mechanic was able to get the car started, but it is not driveable according to the shop. I was told by the shop that the car needs a new master brake cylinder, some new brake lines and new rear drum brake cylinders. Addtionally, there is no radio, there are some make-shift electrical toggle switches on the console that the previous owner installed. There are also rust bubbles on the top of the driver's front fender, a very small crack in the driver's side fiberglass headlight bucket, along with other imperfections in the paint. The car has a non-original '72-'73 240Z console and a 280Z steering wheel. The bumpers are all intact, but will need to be re-chromed. With regard to the pictures of the undercarriage, there are rust issues and the the car will need new frame rails, new floor pans and will need attention in other areas of the car as well.
As previously mentioned, the car's VIN places this car as a July 1970 build 240Z project car that comes with its original numbers-matching engine that has its issues and really should be restored. According to Zhome.com, there were only 17,740 1970 model year 240Zs built worldwide, by far the lowest production number when compared to the 1971, 1972 and 1973 model years for the 240Z. Also per Zhome.com, for the 1971 240Z model year there were 38,371 240Zs produced worldwide, more than double the production of the 1970 model year.
