1980 Datsun 200SX SL Additional Info:

Here's a unicorn for you- a surviving 1980 Datsun 200SX, nee Nissan Gazelle hatchback. These are known for ferocious rust, so few are left, fewer still of the less common hatchback body. This is the first year of the all-new S110 body, and the first application for the fuel-injected Z20E 4-cylinder engine.

This car was recently acquired, literally, out of a barn in Michigan. He said he bought it around 15 years prior in Florida for his wife, who apparently LOVED this car and drove all over. Unfortunately she got sick and passed away about five years ago, and the car was just parked. So here we are, and I will give you the goods and the bads.

What I CAN tell is whoever the previous owner got it from did aquickie bondo and paint job. That said, there's only a few bondo spots, and it is remarkably good paint, except for some overspray.

GOOD:

Runs reasonably well- holds 700-rpm idle, decent power

Transmission shifts very well, clutch takeup right off floor, very linear

Brakes OK, not stellar (previous owner says they were just gone through)

Fresh oil and filter change

New battery and reman alternator

All gauges work as they should

Sport Luxury (SL) package- fancy upholstery, message center, stereo upgrade, power mirrors and antenna, rear window wiper.

Interior VERY nice (considering) and complete

Spare tire NEVER used, all tools still in place

Doors and hatch rust-free and shut with authority

Excellent floorpans, cowl, roof and outer body (except as noted below)

Power mirrors work flawlessly.

BAD:

Front fenders are history

Rockers may or may not (probably not) be completely solid

Rear floor drop panels to quarters are gone (picture 21). Badly patched with a LOT of filler.

Exhaust system is seriously cobbled together, no catalytic convertor, but DOES run the length of the car, for what that's worth.

Sound system does not power up at all.

Rear speaker grilles (unobtanium) are pretty broken.

Tear (cut?) in top of back seat (see picture).

Shifter seal to floor worn out and broken, but comes with car.

Car has power steering, but idler pulley and bracket are missing. Not an issue unless car is stopped.

New battery and alternator, but "BATT" light stays on. Gauges read normal.

Gas tank has BIG leak- won't hold over 1/3 tank without seeping all over the place, needs replacement. As in, if shipped, the car needs to be on the bottom in the back.

Power antenna seems to be dead, but may be tied into sound system not powering on.

Aftermarket 'trip computer' in console ahead of shifter that doesn't work, but never turns off, either.Appears to behard-wired into lighter circuit (lighter and ashtray missing) and constant draw on battery. Must disconnect battery every time it's parked.

Car has air conditioning, but not functioning. In fact, the button is broken, and won't turn on or off.

So no, not perfect, notreally close, but when did you last see one?I bought to restore to a decent driver, but it's beyond my basic tinkering ability and I've already moved on.I would love to see this restored (as would the previous owner)- after all, where will you find another one?

My price is negotiable- seriously, send a 'Best Offer' if interested. Who knows, I might say yes!

Any shipping is totally up to you, but I am happy to meet up somewhere. The car is driveable (mostly), but not licensed.
