Looking for a classic that has extra power that you can have fun with, but not draw a whole bunch of unwanted attention? This might be it! At first glance, this Chevelle 300 simply looks like a clean, restored Chevelle. Look closer and the wheels and lowered stance give away the fact that there may be something special about this otherwise docile looking Chevelle.
This car was originally optioned as a Chevelle 300 with a few options like factory A/C, tinted windshield, and deluxe seat belts. On the exterior this Chevelle retains the clean and simple base Chevelle coupe styling with chrome bumpers, dual round headlights, no SS badges, and bench seat. The body has been left alone as far as customization goes. Drip rails, door handles, rear panel badging, grille, mirror, and lights are all correct for this car. Just two little badges give away this car's secret for those who are eagle eyed and notice - 427ci badges on the front side of the fenders. The other telltale signs that all is not "normal" on this car are a lowered ride height and aftermarket wheels - more on those items later. Originally painted Sandalwood Tan (code T) over Fawn interior (code 704), the current color combination offers a bit more color contrast. The body is in great, solid condition with all panels and trim fitting just as they should. The dark red paint is glossy and even throughout with no sign of overspray.
Inside is a classic combination of a bench seat with a 4 speed on the floor. The interior combination of Light Fawn and Medium Fawn is reminiscent of the original factory specs of Medium Fawn vinyl and Black cloth inserts. The color combination looks great with the red exterior. The interior is extremely nice - really it looks brand new. Like the exterior, the fit and finish are excellent. Door panels, headliner, all trim, and carpeting show extremely well. The interior features a red dashboard, a few auxiliary gauges, a tach angled at the driver, red thin rimmed steering wheel, and a shifter for the 4 speed close at hand. The trunk is detailed with speckle paint, a mat, and full size spare.
This car originally rolled out of the Kansas City Missouri production plant with a 230ci Inline 6 mated to a Powerglide transmission. That is a stark difference from what the car has under the hood now. Currently, a 427ci V8 mated to a 4 speed manual transmission takes up a little more real estate under the hood than the original Inline 6 did. Of course it puts out a few more ponies as well. The engine has a ProForm 950 4BBL carb, Edelbrock Intake Manifold, aluminum radiator, and polished valve covers. A close look in the engine bay reveals a power steering pump, and factory A/C pump, both of which work. 15" American Racing wheels are necessary to allow a little extra space at the front of the car to fit the Wilwood power disc brakes. The wheels are wrapped in Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires in the hopes that they provide a little more grip, and get the power from that 427 to the pavement. As you would expect, the 427 sounds great, this is partly due to the combination of Hooker competition headers and magnaflow mufflers with downturned tips that end just before the rear axle tube. Coilovers allow ride height adjustment, while Wilwood power disc brakes in the front of the car provide a little more stopping power than the stock units would've. Oftentimes brakes are overlooked when cars like this are built, but you have to remember that a fast car has to be able to stop!
It's obvious that this car has been built right, with no corners cut. The engine bay is neat, the interior shows extremely well, the body panels line up just right, and the paint is glossy and clearly professionally applied. This is a car that can be enjoyed without drawing a lot of attention to the owner.....unless you decide to put your right foot down. Then things change, and this docile looking Chevy quickly shows it's other personality. Be sure to check out all the photos and video on our main website: Garage Kept Motors.
