1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible

During the early 1960s, Detroit’s Big Three automakers introduced their own compact cars to compete with the imported cars that were becoming popular in the United States. Chevrolet’s response to this challenge was a revolutionary new car called the Corvair. The new Corvair was powered by an air-cooled, horizontal, six-cylinder engine that was built almost entirely out of aluminum. The engine was mounted in the rear of the car and powered the rear wheels through a compact transaxle assembly. Suspension was independent at all four wheels. There was no conventional frame and it was the first Uni-body built by Fisher. The car was so revolutionary that Time magazine put the Corvair on its front cover, and Motor Trend named it their 1960 “Car of the Year”.

This 1964 Corvair Monza Convertible was sold new at Union Motors in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a well-preserved, mostly original car that was just removed from a long-term collection. The body is rock solid and straight. The body panels and components show hardly any signs of damage or repair. The doors, hood and trunk fit the body assemblies well with good alignment. The paint appears mostly original. From a distance, the paint shows well, but upon close inspection, you can see the scratches, dings and the normal signs of aging that you would expect on an original car. The hood appears to have been repainted at some point, but nicely blends with the rest of the car. The black vinyl interior is very clean and presents well. The glass is in good condition and the dashboard assembly is clean and complete with all of its proper gauges and controls. The convertible top assembly is intact, but the top covering will need to be replaced. An oil cooler was added as can be seen in the photos. The chrome and stainless trim items are original and also well preserved. Mechanically, this car seems to run and drive well with the exception of an oil leak, which will need to be repaired. The odometer shows 25,136 and is probably 125,136 but we cannot confirm this one way or the other. There are some paper goods with the car as well as some of the original air cleaner as seen in the photos.

This is a very clean and mostly original car that can be enjoyed as-is or easily improved by its next owner. We have priced it reasonably at $8,900.00. For more information, please contact David Weber at (314) 993-1330.
