1957 Buick Special 4 Door Sedan

“Buick is beauty in motion” hailed the original sales literature in 1957, “the perfect blend of new looks with new action.” And they certainly were right. The 1957 Buick with its “Sweep-Ahead design” still is “eye-pleasing from every viewpoint” almost 60 years later.

The car offered in this listing has its original 250 horsepower 364 ci engine with 2 barrel carb and variable pitch Dynaflow transmission, touted at the time as “providing the unbroken motion of silken smoothness.” When the key selector is turned to the ON position, depressing the gas pedal activates the starter and brings the Nailhead to life. The quiet rumble of the engine resonates through dual exhaust routed through the rear bumper.

As the Special was the lowest trim level car of Buick’s 1957 lineup, it came standard with fewer creature comforts. True to that theme, this car is equipped with manual steering and brakes. It does, however, sport some of the optional equipment like a clock and the padded Safety Instrument Panel Cover (padded dashboard).

The car offered in this listing was restored/refurbished in the early to mid 1990s. At that time the engine and transmission were rebuilt along with many of the car’s other systems. It was at that time too that the car received its red and white paint and matching interior - one of the most distinctive color combinations offered by Buick that year.

Some modern upgrades that the car has picked up along the trail are its electric windshield wiper motor and a modern AM/FM/CD player concealed in the glovebox.

Overall, this a just a nice old car that is showing a bit of wear. It runs, drives, and stops. It is not perfect, but with a little love will make an excellent driver and local show goer, or with a little more commitment could be taken to the next level. (When was the last time you encountered one of these amidst the sea of tri-fives at any cruise night?) There are some things that the new owner will want to do as money and time allow, like replace the front driver and passenger glass, which were cracked by clip-on flag holders used in a parade. The chrome will be due for a dip somewhere down the line but could be polished up a bit now. Replacing the older bias ply tires with a new set or radials will likely be required before planning on doing any serious touring.

I have included numerous photos that adequately depict the car’s condition. See the following Youtube video to see more:
