Unveiled as its new flagship model for 1991, BMW’s 850i was a grand touring coupe with either a V-8 or a V-12 under the hood. This is one of 1,711 850i models exported to the U.S. in 1991, one of 241 or 11 percent of 850i models finished in this color and it is one of the first mass-production vehicles to use a drive-by-wire throttle. This car was sold new at Roadshow BMW in Memphis Tennessee then spent most of its ownership in Dallas TX and only has 90,404 actual miles!

Made in BMW’s Dingolfing, Germany in February 1991, this car is finished in Sterling Silver (code 244). Its paint and trim are in overall very good order, with some minor blemishes visible upon close inspection.

The car’s bodywork is solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo bay is in very good shape and comes with a nearly complete tool roll and the battery appears in good order. The state of the car’s body-colored bumpers echoes the rest of the exterior.

This car rolls on radials, size 235/35ZR19 in front and 275/30ZR19 in back. Each tire is wrapped around an ACR 10-spoke, two-tone spider wheels.

Under the hood is BMW’s 5.0L SOHC V-12 motor (code M70B50). It’s a 60-degree engine with an aluminum alloy engine block, aluminum cylinder heads, electronic throttle control, mass airflow sensors, timing chains and hydraulic valve lifters. Backing this engine is a ZF 4HP24 four-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include a solid sunroof, automatic climate control, trip computer, fog lights, cruise control, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, power front seats with heat and memory functions but the passenger seat power seat does not operate in the up or down position. The model is one of BMW’s first to feature a multi-link rear axle.

Inside, the car’s Marine Blue Nappa leather interior is in sharp contrast to its argent exterior and it’s one of 89 850i models so upholstered. The front bucket seats and rear bench are in overall very good condition. The driver’s seat, particularly on the side bolsters, shows signs of previous enjoyment, which translates to some minimal wear. The matching carpet and headliner are in very good order as well, giving the vehicle a soothing presence. The car’s four-spoke steering wheel has an airbag. The car’s instrument panel and inner door panels look great, as does the center console. The car has an Alpine AM/FM stereo with a Pioneer six-disc CD changer.

Competition to this 850i in 1991 included Aston Martin’s Virage, Chevrolet’s Corvette, Dodge’s Stealth R/T, Honda’s NSX, Mazda’s RX-7, Mitsubishi’s 3000GT, Nissan’s 300ZX, Porsche’s 944 S2 and Toyota’s Supra.

Taking the V-12 motor and automatic transmission from the 750iL sedan, BMW used them as building blocks for its 8-series coupe, putting them under a sleek, two-door body with pop-up headlights and an interior that oozed luxury in the early 1990s.

Documentation includes original owner’s manual with maintenance stamps dating from the fall of 1992, original consumer warranty information, original authorized service directory, original roadside assistance and other information.

These were rare models when new and almost as hard to find today. If you always wanted to own BMW’s top-of-the-line touring coupe when it was new, you have a second chance. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this gorgeous touring coupe for yourself
