1977 AMC AM Van

The following information is being presented on this concept vehicle called the American Motors AM Van. This concept vehicle was presented at the “AMC Concept 80 show”. The AM Van was a big hit because of the concept for its usage, its size and its idea of four-wheel drive and the fact that it was two inches shorter than a VW.

This one off concept vehicle was presented at the auto shows in a ‘styling buck’ form. The definition of a styling buck is: a vehicle that is presented to the upper echelon executives in its completed in a rolling full scale exterior form without mechanicals and very often presented in the outdoors so that a decision can be made by upper echelon executives as to whether the appearance is acceptable for a green light to go forward with the production of the design.

For those that are not familiar with the various steps that the automotive corporations use to make that decision for final production design, most automotive designs start off with a sketch by an automotive artist. From that sketch a small-scale clay model is made. If the small clay model is accepted in its appearance, then a large full scale clay model is made.

If the large clay model is approved than the project goes to the next level as a full-scale fiberglass styling buck that represents the outside appearance of the car as if it is a full running vehicle on wheels. Styling bucks are not motorized but have the appearance that they are.

The following paragraph is an excerpt from the American Motors press release of 1977 for the Concept 80’s. The AM Van which had emerged as the most popular design among the six proposed designs in that series which were being presented to the AMC executives.

Concept AM Van has emerged as the most popular design among the six unique concept cars being exhibited by American Motors Corporation.

“When the concept AM Van was first released for public viewing, ‘concept AM Van’ was conceived as a go anywhere four wheel drive vehicle with excellent potential for recreational and utility use in addition to family transportation: American Motors sees as future trends in smaller, fuel efficient automobiles for the 1980s.

The car that you see before you is the “Real McCoy” 1977 AMC AM Van and was acquired by the present famous auto collection where it now resides when Chrysler bought out American Motors. The now current collection has had this car for approximately 25 years. Since that time this concept car has been presented at many museums for exhibition including the Gilmore Museum in approximately 1995 and the Kenosha Historical Society Museum 2014 among others. It is considered one of the two rarest American Motors concept pieces that exist today.
